The Best Definition of History, EVER!

It took me several years to find this book again, but thanks to the internet and Amazon I have. I encountered this book in college in the early 70s and have used Donald Gawronski's definition for history for over 30 years as a teacher. ALL my students not only memorize it, but learn to understand what it means on the first day of class. For years after graduation, if I meet a former student on the street, the first thing out of their mount is "The interpretive study of the recorded facts..."

Dr. Gawronski's book on how we study and interpret history is a must read for all those studying history. His understanding of methodology and historiography are brilliant.

Holly Parker, PhD, teaches psychology at Harvard University, is a clinical psychologist at the Edith Nourse Rogers Memorial Veterans Hospital, and is the author and coauthor of a number of scientific papers appearing in peer-reviewed journals. She has worked extensively with individuals and couples in the areas of depression, trauma, self-esteem, lifestyle, and relationship issues. A four-time recipient of the George W. Goethals Teaching Prize, and a two-time recipient of the Derek Bok Center Certificate of Excellence and Distinction in Teaching,—awards that go to instructors with the highest student ratings—she has a reputation as a masterful and engaging teacher. In addition to her educational and clinical work, Dr. Parker works to help her patients use lifestyle changes, including exercise, nutrition, sleep, close relationships, and connection with nature, to heal emotional wounds and improve well-being. Best book ever of Public Speaking

I just retired and have often had the responsibility of speaking in public. I have read plenty of "speech" books but never one so lucid, engaging, and enlightening as this one by Mr. Humes. I really enjoyed the book took copious notes and hopefully although gone from the workplace will be invited in the near future to speak at a gathering. If you have a leadership position anywhere this is a must read.

Learn from the masters

There are so many gems in this book, for new and seasoned speakers alike. If you're looking for practical advice that you an implement to improve your public speaking, this is a terrific resource. I will admit that I was a little put out by the frequent biblical references, but the rest of the content is so good that it still makes the book worthwhile.

Do bear in mind that some suggestions may be a wee outdated or should only be used in certain situations. For example, I thought I'd try the suggestion to bring extra emphasis to a quote during a speech by lifting a paper and reading the quote rather than just reciting it. It seemed like a good idea at the time, but when I tried this the first (and only) time during a Toastmasters speech, several evaluators suggested that I try to memorize quotes rather than read them. Admittedly, it did feel a little awkward when I did it, but sometimes it doesn't hurt to try something new!

Great Book On Public Speaking

Great book on public speaking and presentations. The author gives anecdotal accounts of real life situations that I found interesting and help the book flow. Over the years I have read similar topic books and have generally found them dry and without much color, this book is the exception. I found numerous pointers on how I can improve my public speaking.
