The social stigma associated with rape is the biggest hurdle that a rape survivor faces right from the time of reporting the matter to the police to the stage of trial. This book, one of the first ethnographic studies of rape trials in India, focuses on the everyday socio-legal processes that underlie the making of rape trials. It describes how state law is transformed in its localization, often to the point of bearing little resemblance to written law.

The work centres around four extended case studies in a trial court in Ahmedabad. These case studies show how the effects of power and knowledge congeal to disqualify women's (and children's) testimonies at different sites of state law such as the police station, forensic science laboratory, or the hospital and the court.

This book describes multiple ways in which public secrecy is subjected to specific revelations in rape trials that do not bring justice to a rape survivor but address and reinforce deeply entrenched phallocentric notions of justice.

Previously Waiting for Revenge

I love this book, over the years I've read it again and again, you know when sometimes you find a book that's just it, it's one of my go to books if I don't know what I fancy reading then I have my favourites which I turn to.

It's the story of a happily married couple Mandy and Mike who go round to a friends one night and she catches him having sex with his friends slutty girlfriend Lana, she's struggling since they have two children Ben and Rachel, can she throw away what's been a happy marriage with a great guy she loves, but can she get over the fact that he's cheated on her and continues to cheat on her, how can she continue to live with someone who would do that to her. On top of this, the day after the cheating she meets Adam a fantastic guy who makes her feel like there could be life after divorce, Adam makes no secret of the fact that he's been watching her run past his house and that he's very interested in her so, should she stay married, confront Mike and get a divorce or get revenge....

My Review:
Usually I hate to read books that involve an unhappy marriage, but something about the description of this story drew me in and I am so glad that it did. I really loved this book. Honestly, I did not put it down from the time I started it until I turned the last page. I just couldn't see how this was all going to turn out for everyone especially knowing that Adam was hiding something and not knowing what exactly it was although I had a pretty good idea.

This book starts on Thanksgiving day with Mandy out walking. She's just walked in on her husband, Mike, and friend having sex on top of a car in the garage and is completely shocked, completely angry, and at a total loss of how to react now. On her walk, she meets Adam. He's been watching her for a couple of months while she walks and has finally gotten brave enough to introduce himself.

The book covers the next month of these people's lives. Mandy quickly decides that her marriage is over, but she's not going to act on that until after Christmas. Mike and Mandy have two kids, ages 10 and 12 and she doesn't want to ruin their holiday with talk of a divorce. In that time, they stay living in the same house and are seeing a marriage counselor (who hits on Mandy when Mike's not around), but she's sleeping in a separate bed. She's also getting MUCH closer to Adam during that time period.

Reading this book was a lot like watching a car wreck. Mandy is completely blown away by Mike's betrayal. They've been married for 13 years and have had a good marriage. They even had sex the morning of his betrayal. She waffles between anger and wanting to give merit to those happy 13 years, but how could she ever trust him again. As a married woman, it's hard to watch her with this struggle. As simply a woman, it's even harder to see her even think about giving him a second chance. It's a tough book and very emotional, but it is so good! It's extremely well-written. You can't help but feel for all of these characters....yes, there were even moments when I felt bad for the jerk, Mike. It's a bad situation and the author shows the myriad of emotions that go with that. BUT even more importantly, she never made it a depressing book. You are caught up in the drama of it all, but never once do you feel like Mandy isn't going to overcome it all...you just are never quite sure HOW she's going to do that.

It was really really good and I truly loved the way that it ended. This book may not be one that I would normally pick up, but I'm so glad that I did today. This is the kind of book that strikes a deep emotional chord and sticks with me for a few days. I love that kind of book!

Too many mistakes

There are too many mistakes in the coding provided as examples. I would have to work through other resources to correct the author's code. That is a very bad quality for a tutorial. Avoid.

Good for those new to MySQL and SQL, but has some issues

Based on the title, I was expecting in-depth coverage of Python's MySQL libraries, or at least for Python to be a main focus of the book. I was disappointed to find that the primary thing this book teaches is the SQL language and the coverage of Python was limited to the bare minimum needed to run the SQL examples. And although it does touch on some of the SQL language elements unique to MySQL, most of the content is standard SQL that would work on many different databases.

If you are new to SQL and are developing non-web applications, using MySQL for a database and Python as your programming language, this book may be valuable to you. If instead, you already know SQL and especially if you are developing web applications, this is not the book for you. I mainly fault the book for claiming too broad of an audience and omitting some important concepts.

Here are some of the major issues:

1. The book never makes the distinction between SQL (the language), MySQL (the database server/DBMS), and MySQL's proprietary SQL extensions. These are important concepts to understand. If this was your first exposure to the SQL language, you would leave with some significant knowledge gaps.

2. The only MySQL library covered is the aging MySQLdb, aka mysql-python. This is the default MySQL library that ships with Python, but there are other libraries, such as SQLalchemy or oursql, which at least deserved to be mentioned.

3. Perhaps the most serious omission is that SQL injection attacks are never covered and throughout the book the example code construct SQL statement strings in a way that could easily be exploited in a web application environment.

4. My jaw dropped when chapter 7 introduced a web-enabled MySQL administration example explained that CGI and PHP were good options for exposing a Python app over the web. That may have been true 10 years ago, but no one would use either in a modern Python web application. Any rational developer would use a web-app framework like Django, which include a nice database abstraction or ORM library - none of which ever get mentioned. The PHP example actually recommends running Python script using the (PHP) shell_exec() function. This sort of thing has no place in a Python book.

5. The book says its examples were written for Python 2.5.2, which was released in Feburary 2008 and later found to have security bugs. I expect most people are smart enough not to blindly go download version 2.5.2, but I would have prefered they mention version 2.5.5 (release January 2010) which fixed the security issues. Better still would have been to target a more modern, mainstream version of Python, like 2.6 or 2.7.

6. In chapter 7, as the book introduces HTML, it mentions the web site W3Schools as "one of the best" sources for HTML tutorials. This could not be more wrong. W3Schools is quite dated and contains many horrible examples that anyone new to modern web development would want to avoid like the plague. It unfortunately shows up at the top of many Google searches, so it gets cited frequently. That may sound trivial, but to me, this is further indication that the author has very limited experience with developing apps for web environments.

In summary, I felt the book did not live up to its title or the various descriptions of its audience and scope. It does contain some good information and would certainly help novice Python programmers needing a broad introduction to using SQL, MySQL and the Python MySQLdb library. Unfortunately, I suspect that most "intermediate Python programmers" (which the book claims to target) will already know enough SQL and MySQL that this would be a disappointing read.

The Sneaky Snowman

My seven year old daughter received this book as one of a five book box set; The Nancy Drew and the Clue Crew Collection: Sleepover Sleuths; Scream for Ice Cream; Pony Problems; The Cinderella Ballet Mystery; Case of the Sneaky Snowman. I was thrilled to see that the old Nancy Drew had been reinvented as a third grader, with her best buds, Bess and George. In this story, Deidre transforms herself into Madame Chocolata, a fortune-teller, and tells Nancy, Bess, and George that their snowman, Sherlock, will "walk away." When Sherlock disappears, all the clues seem to indicate that Deidre's prediction has come true. But can a snowman walk?

The book is well written and includes several nicely illustrated pictures. The recommended age range is 6-9; Grades 1-4. My daughter is in Second Grade and is able to independently read this books (I should probably mention that she currently reads at a 4th Grade level.) When she first received the box set for her 7th birthday last summer, my husband and I would take turns reading the books with her. Now that she is in Second Grade she is able to read them independently. As a parent, I highly recommend the Nancy Drew and the Clue Crew books; they are interesting, thought provoking, entertaining, and are age appropriate.

Good book to keep the kids interested in reading.

Got this for our daughter #4. She's nine. It is a good book for a quick read. She likes books like this and the A-Z mysteries. I like them too. They keep you interested enough for together time, and keeps her interested in reading. On to number 6, and number 7, etc

Great Series!! I purchased Books 1-8, for an 8-year old...she absolutely loves them. She enjoys reading, and since she is required to read 30-minutes every night for school, the chapter books come in very handy. She often finds herself reading more than 30-minutes, because she wants to finish a certain chapter, etc. The stories are great, fun, interesting, the illustrations are okay. She looks forward to following the main characters throughout the different series. Also worth mentioning, is the "activity" page within the books; they are projects that can be done later if interested, and if you enjoy doing some craft with your little ones every once in a while, it's a nice addition (sometimes she wants to do them...thankfully not always). Highly recommend the books, and will definitely be purchasing additional series. Case of the Sneaky Snowman (Nancy Drew and the Clue Crew #5)

What we need to know about in parenting a child w/ RAD

I don't think this is about the format of the book as much as the content of the book! As a self-published book Jessie did an outstanding job presenting his story. I believe his purpose was to educate and to present information from the heart. Who better to discuss this life altering diagnosis as one who lived it! I wish this book had been a round 22 years ago. My step daughter has reactive attachment d/o and I know I parented her wrong. Expecting a child who never attached to act like one who did, was one of the biggest mistake I made in trying to parent her. I have since gone on to get my master's degree in social work and have worked with many, many children who have RAD. I know from this work that the story presented by Jessie is an accurate portrayal of RAD. His suggestions for helping a child w/ RAD were right on. If you are parenting a child w/ RAD or know a child with RAD I highly recommend this first person account of this disorder.

Wish I had known about this book before

As a parent of two adopted sons, one who has had struggles with attachment, respect and empathy, and one who has textbook RAD, I found this book so helpful. I have had to make the tough calls that Jessie Hogsett's parents had to make. This is a must read for parents with RAD kids and for parents considering adoption foster care. It was so helpful to see RAD through the eyes of a survivor. It helped me understand my son's so much better. I felt like I was reading their autobiographies. If you have a child with RAD, this book will help you be armed to hold on tight, even while making the tough calls for what is best for you child.

I really enjoyed this book. As a mother of 5, 4 of which are adopted from foster care it gave me great insight to some of the things that might be going through their heads. I applaud Jessie for being brave enough to put his story out their for the world to read and to help thousands of adoptive parents better understand what is going on with their child(ren)

Sleep no more

I have stumbled through 60 years of confusion and questions. As an African-American it has been disheartening to live in a world where you simply exist. No knowledge of history or ancestory beyond slavery,stripped of eveything that is the basis and core of who you are. Buying and reading this book was the best thing I ever did....it has awakened me from a deep sleep. I intend to re-read this book and others like it in my quest for the truth.
