About the Author
Steven C. Hause is Senior Scholar in the Humanities and Co-Director of European Studies at Washington University in St. Louis. He was formerly. Professor of History and Fellow in International Studies at the University of Missouri�St. Louis, where he has won the Chancellor�s Award for Excellence in Teaching (1996) and the Pierre Laclede Honors College Teacher of the Year Award (1989). He is the author and co-author of three previous books on the history of the women�s rights movement in modern France, which have won four research prizes: WOMEN�S SUFFRAGE AND SOCIAL POLITICS IN THE FRENCH THIRD REPUBLIC, with Anne R. Kenney (Princeton University Press, 1984); HUBERTINE AUCLERT, THE FRENCH SUFFRAGETTE (Yale University Press, 1987); and FEMINISMS OF THE BELLE EPOQUE, with Jennifer Waelti-Walters (University of Nebraska Press, 1994). His essays have appeared in several journals, including AMERICAN HISTORICAL REVIEW AND FRENCH HISTORICAL STUDIES.

William S. Maltby is Professor of History Emeritus at the University of Missouri at St. Louis, where he continues to teach on a regular basis. Among his publications are: THE BLACK LEGEND IN ENGLAND: THE DEVELOPMENT OF ANTI-SPANISH SENTIMENT, 1558�1660 (Duke University Press, 1971); ALBA: A BIOGRAPHY OF FERNANDO ALVAREZ DE TOLEDO, THIRD DUKE OF ALBA, 1507�1582 (University of California Press, 1983); and articles on various aspects of Early Modern European history. From 1977 to 1997 he also served as Executive Director of the Center for Reformation Research and as editor of several volumes and series of volumes on the history of the Reformation.

I think both undergraduates and graduates students in physics will find this text enjoyable and enlightening. The sections on general relativity and cosmology are, I think, a little less thorough and complicated than those in Wald or Shultz, though I've only briefly perused those other texts. (GR is still plenty abstract and mathematical in Rindler.) The end of chapter exercises are well-chosen and lead the reader to understand the material. Rindler does an excellent job of keep physical insight at the forefront of his discussions. He points out and resolves a number of interesting paradoxes, and he mentions a number of interesting modern experiments when relevant.

no explanation of tensors, co-variance, etc.

The author does a pretty good job of explaining physical concepts, but is obviously impatient at explaining mathematics. In the chapter on electromagnetism he introduces tensor notation and important theorems such as co- and contra-variance without explanation. In some cases he says "the proof is left to the reader." The treatment is much less detailed than Einstein's original 1915 paper. It is like a book that purports to teach you French, and which summarily presents an abstract French-English dictionary and then the rest of the book is written in French.

Professor Rindler explains the concepts with clarity and rigour while minimising the complexities of the notation and formulae. His ability to put ideas into words is outstanding. If you have heard the tales of trains that whoosh past in the ether, and are still none the wiser; or have wondered how the background radiation that set out on its way at the speed of light when the world was a smaller simpler place is only now reaching us, this book will enlighten you. Even for those whose maths cannot keep up it should be worthwhile, stimulating even, to read the sections at the beginning of each chapter, and those elsewhere light in formulae. For those willing to tackle the exercises he is perhaps a little too generous with the hints.

About the Author
Brien was born in Rochester, Minnesota, U.S.A. but grew up on the west coast of Canada. At age 11, he became fascinated with the Native art of the Haida native people, and began carving totem poles, and other related art forms, learning from Native teachers. After completing an Honours Bachelor Of Science degree, Brien decided to take up carving and sculpture full time, at the age of 25. In 1995 he moved to Maui, Hawaii, and was hired as assistant project manager for the building of the 62 foot double hull sailing canoe ( ancestor of the modern day catamaran ) Mo’okiha O Pi’ilani ( Sacred Lizard That Pierces The Heavens ) and the restoration of the famous Mo’olele sailing canoe. This project lasted 2 years. There, having learned how to make Hawaiian outrigger canoe paddles from master carver Keola Sequiera, he started an online outrigger paddle business, which flourished internationally. Peru became his next major area of interest. The study of the Inca culture led to his writing a book, A Brief History Of The Incas which is available on this site, and is now the assistant director of the Paracas History Museum in Paracas, south of Lima. He is also assisting the municipality of Paracas to improve the number of foreign tourists that visit, as well as is fundamental in expanding tourism in general, especially as regards showing all visitors the 10,000 years of human occupation of this area, through tours of major and minor archaeological sites. Other projects, which will result in published books, include one about the ancient history of Hawaii, the mysterious stone monuments of Peru that predate the Inca, and the search for the lost continent of Mu. This will require combining all that he has learned so far, with trips to New Zealand (Aotearoa), Hawaii, and Easter island (Rapanui.) He is the author of 8 books, 4 appearances on Ancient Aliens, season 3, numerous radio interviews, and resides in Peru with his wife.

Folksy accessible writing style, good information

Like any other travel guide for a place I've never been to, I can't speak to the accuracy or completeness of the content of this guide. However, the writing style is casual without being boring and he approaches his subject matter with a lot of curiosity. He tries to paint a historical context for understanding what you're seeing when you visit Machu Picchu and Cusco, for pre-Inca monolithic stone work to Inca stonework itself. I'll be traveling to Peru later this year, so I'll have an opportunity to see how accurate his descriptions are. There is a 'alien' undertone to some of his explanations as to how some of the stonework could have been completed by the indigenous people with the tool technologies they had. He goes to THAT well a few more times than necessary, which I think that detracts from the overall story he's telling. It's very clear he loves this region.

About the Author
Andrew Peterson wurde in San Diego im US-Staat Kalifornien geboren und verbrachte dort seine Kindheit und Jugend. Er studierte Architektur an der University of Oklahoma. Bereits in seiner Jugend gewann er seinen ersten Schie�wettbewerb und entwickelte eine lebenslange Begeisterung f�r das Sportschie�en mit Gewehren. Im Laufe der Jahre gewann Peterson Titel bei verschiedenen Wettbewerben im S�dwesten der USA, darunter eine Goldmedaille bei der Meisterschaft des Staates Nevada von 1995, und im Jahr davor einen ersten Platz bei der Meisterschaft im Gewehrschie�en auf tausend Meter des Staates Arizona. Peterson ist im Besitz des Master-Titels im Klassifizierungssystem Gewehrschie�en der National Rifle Association (NRA).

Peterson schrieb 1997 seinen ersten Nathan-McBride-Roman. Eine ernsthafte Karriere als Autor verfolgte er jedoch erst ab 2005, als er seine erste Schriftstellerkonferenz besuchte. About the Author
Wayne Lewis is a lifelong Alaskan gardener. He has worked with Jeff Lowenfels on many projects over the past 25 years, including the now national Plant a Row for the Hungry program, which encourages gardeners to donate a portion of their harvest to charitable organizations in their community.

A popular national garden writer and leading proponent of gardening using concepts of the soil food web, Jeff Lowenfels is the former president of the Garden Writers of America. In 2005, he was inducted into the GWA Hall of Fame, the highest honor a garden writer can achieve. His is the author of Teaming with Nutrients: The Organic Gardener's Guide to Optimizing Plant Nutrition.

Teaming with microbes, and industry?

I enjoyed the beginning of Teaming with Microbes, but as I went on through it, I began to be uncomfortable with some of its tone. The authors seemed to be wanting to put their attachment to non-organic industrial lawn and garden products behind them, but they also seem to be doing advance work for a new bio-tech industry, rather than just proposing to work "with" the soil life in an organic way.

They relate [p.69] that one of them wrote a weekly gardening column for 30 years and never once mentioned mycorrhiza "out of sheer ignorance." On the same page they write, that it was only in the 1990's that the term mycorrhiza started to "creep into the agricultural industry's lexicon, much less the home gardener's." Most organic gardeners are aware that it is with home gardeners and "soil pioneers" progress is made in soil science, and not in an entrenched industry.

On p. 125, with the section "a quick look forward," they write, "Given the advancing scientific techniques, the high degree of interest in the subject, and the human as well as the monetary implications of usable bio-products, it is certain more will be taken up - more and more often - as additional tools for restoration and maintenance." In other words, more industry involvement.

Further, on page 126, the authors disclose their wish for the bio-tech development of "an endophytic fungi that rids the lawn of dandelions." The development of such a fungi that kills dandelions could be an ecological disaster. Besides the value of dandelions as a food source for many nations outside of the U.S., dandelions are a nitrogen fixing soil improving plant. Then too, did the authors consider that the bio-tech created endophytic fungi might adapt to also kill other root vegetables, such as sugar beets, and carrots? And by what means could such a fungi be kept from spreading outside the neighbor's lawn.

Again, it seems to me that although the sub-title of Teaming with Microbes is "The Organic Gardener's Guide to the Soil Food Web," the authors do not have the understanding of what organic gardening really is.

I'm going to return my book, and find another better one to understand soil dynamics and maintenance.

Should have revised more

The first part of the book is pretty good. But then it comes completely off the rails in the second part. The author admits that mycorrhizal fungus is new to him. Adding a chapter on the subject for this latest revision was insufficient. The facts about mycorrhizal fungus means his theories about plant succession and bacterial vs fungal soil is completely wrong. Some vegetables are very dependant on mycorrhizal fungus. He should have completely rewritten part two. Example link:[...]
I agree that people should not till in the spring just before planting. But tilling in the late fall and working in organic matter and then planting a mycorrhizal cover crop will renew the fungus and achieve superior results. Buy this book for the first part and then ignore the second part.

Permaculture + Teaming with Microbes = Awesome

Such a paradigm shift! I had started out learning about organic gardening, then began learning about Gaia's Garden, Second Edition: A Guide To Home-Scale Permaculture and recently found Teaming with Microbes. I will never think about gardening or the earth the same way again. Dandelions = a calcium deficiency in your lawn? I used to think they were just lawn weeds who's leaves could be purchased at health food stores for a high price as a foodie delicacy. Love. Love. Love this book. It teaches you, in a very easy to understand way, how the soil food web works and what you can do to naturally improve your soil and crops/plants for sustainable and efficient growth. Now that's a gardening book. Brilliant. 5 stars!

In the second half of the nineteenth century, global labor migration, trade, and overseas study brought China and the United States into close contact, leading to new cross-cultural encounters that brought mixed-race families into being. Yet the stories of these families remain largely unknown. How did interracial families negotiate their identities within these societies when mixed-race marriage was taboo and "Eurasian" often a derisive term?

In Eurasian, Emma Jinhua Teng compares Chinese-Western mixed-race families in the United States, China, and Hong Kong, examining both the range of ideas that shaped the formation of Eurasian identities in these diverse contexts and the claims set forth by individual Eurasians concerning their own identities. Teng argues that Eurasians were not universally marginalized during this era, as is often asserted. Rather, Eurasians often found themselves facing contradictions between exclusionary and inclusive ideologies of race and nationality, and between overt racism and more subtle forms of prejudice that were counterbalanced by partial acceptance and privilege.

By tracing the stories of mixed and transnational families during an earlier era of globalization, Eurasian also demonstrates to students, faculty, scholars, and researchers how changes in interracial ideology have allowed the descendants of some of these families to reclaim their dual heritage with pride.

Outstanding Treatment of Complex Topic

Emma Jinhua Teng examines the descendants of Chinese-European unions in the United States, Hong Kong, and China. She develops this study against the backdrop of the history of the Chinese in the United States and Europeans in China and Hong Kong from the mid-19th century to the mid-20th century. While Eurasians faced discrimination by European Americans and the Chinese, there are also instances where they were welcomed by parents, grandparents, and neighbors. In today's United States, many people identify with multiple ethnicities, races, and cultures. This book may point the way to examining today's hybrid population and the kind of new America that is developing. Clearly, the fears surrounding mixed-bloods seem quaint and erroneous by today's standards. Hawaii is a good laboratory for studying hybrid culture because the mixing has been underway for more than a century and the mixture of cultures is a matter of considerable pride.

Lowndes's underlying premise is that all women are desperately trying to get men's attentions whenever in public, but she really sticks to bars and clubs for her examples. Lowndes's writing style and voice do not help this audiobook. Her raspy and deep voice brings images of an older, cigarette-smoking woman, which is not a bad thing, but not particularly convincing to the audience (men who need to be convinced attractive women want them). While cheesy punch lines and excessive hyperbole may work well within the printed text, on audio these lines fall short and evoke eye rolls. A professional narrator might have overcome these inhibitors, but Lowndes's tone evokes the faux enthusiasm often encountered with salespeople. ACitadel Press paperback. (Oct.)

Worth Every Penny And More

First of all, anyone who tells you the info in this book about the way women signal men isn't valid must have very little or even no experience with them. I've seen these same signals of interest over and over and over again. I've used this info in my life to pick-up girls and have sat in a bar and seen women give them to other men too (more often than not dude has no clue).

For example, I'm sitting next to a hardbody at the bar with her back turned. I'm facing slightly away from her watching the sports screen and notice she starts to toss her hair on and off a few times. She isn't looking at me so I'm patient and keep enjoying my meal. She says to her friend, "That chicken sure looks good"(what I was eating). So I say, "Gotta keep it healthy" to her and things went really great from there.

Just read this book and go out to your favorite bar or club and people watch the chicks in there for a while. You'll see this stuff used by them _constantly_ to signal interest. Now, that doesn't mean you can't just "assume attraction" and cold approach her without a body language signal if you want (I sometimes do). Just know that your chance of success is higher when she signals interest first.

And remember, it's called "game" for a reason....be sure to have fun first and foremost.

OVER-HYPED PSYCHOBABBLE THAT'S ALL FILLER, NO THRILLER...

... I was really looking forward to reading this book, but page after page, it was nothing more than hot air promising to enlighten the reader on this, that and the other thing but never delivering the goods on how to actually score - all it was were her personal theories bolstered by study after study of "findings" (some of these studies involving experiments with rodents, of all things)... however, most of those findings are hardly conclusive when you take into account the most critical factor of all - what women say and what they actually do are often in conflict (the author admits this herself on page 106).

For instance, take the typical gal who bemoans the lack of decent single guys as she describes her ideal man as practically being the nerd-next-door, and yet she'll only throw herself at every "bad boy" that crosses her path. One can only conclude that women are attracted to nice guys in theory only; they're ultimately ruled by their emotions and have no control over who turns them on, no matter how they may try to intellectualize what kind of guy they claim to be attracted to.

More than anything, women have very strong survival instincts and need to feel financially secure. That mindset usually leads them right to the straight-laced, button-down type with favourable income-earning potential who can fulfill that need (usually the guy she'll marry), while being sexually attracted to an entirely different type of guy altogether (the dude that rocks her world who she'll carry on an affair with).

How do I know this? Because at least 25% of the women I meet are married (or otherwise attached) and, usually after a few drinks and a couple of frisky slow dances, they'll make it very clear to me in no uncertain terms that they're in the market for a torrid affair, no strings attached, would I be interested? The reasons vary, but usually it's because they're not physically and/or sexually attracted to their mates and, in many cases, apparently never have been.

After reading so many books on the subject of picking up women (from both male and female authors), I'm now 100% convinced that your best advice will come from guys who know from experience what it takes to score. A female can't teach you how to pick her up and close the deal because:

1) every woman's level of resistance is different - some are easy to pick up, others are next to impossible;

2) every woman's concept of male beauty and appealing characteristics varies from one to the next;

3) because they're always mindful of their reputation among their social peers, many women believe that the only way they can be picked up for a one-night stand is if they have an overwhelming physical attraction to you in the first place or are otherwise flat-out drunk - most gals are confident that their "defense shield" is impenetrable and don't take into account the smooth-talking joe with all the right moves who can charm them into the sack;

4) you can't teach "chemistry" - either it's there or it isn't, and it can only be gauged in face-to-face situations;

5) what women THINK they want in theory and what they actually find themselves attracted to in real life are, more often than not, nothing alike.

As for the body language stuff? Puh-leeze. Even the average frustrated chump would be able to decipher 90% of these so-called "undercover sex signals" (fluffing her hair? licking her lips? sticking out her chest? hello, McFly! is anyone home?).

Reading this book was like listening to someone build up an elaborate joke but forgetting what the punch line was - it just didn't deliver.

Bottom line: don't bother with books about how to pick up women written by women, because most of the time, they don't even know what they really want in the first place. They might scorn the handsome, muscular ladies' man in theory, but when they're feeling sexy and want to get their freak on, guess who they'll throw themselves at?

It is 55% body language

How can we tell women are interested? Are women constantly giving us signals that we are just not picking up on, or that some men are picking up on, and acting on successfully?

Well, when it comes to body language, most men are oblivious to about 95% of the buying signals that women are giving out, or misinterpreting them.

There are photographs throughout of women demonstrating the various signals, which are supported by science.

Imagine you're walking into a bar, you see a woman, she holds eye contact for several moments then looks away and down. Is she interested? How do you respond? Subtleties in your response make or break the situation.

Experts say only 7% of communication is verbal, 38% is tonality, and 55% is body language. Which is better to know, the 7% or the 55%?

When you are talking to a woman, should you lead by turning your body towards her, or let her lead by moving her body towards you? If you don't know the answer, you need this book.

Leil understands the way men think, and speaks to the male point of view, and eerily at times seems to know what we are thinking.

Perhaps, the single most interesting and persuasive story for me concerns her aesthetically challenged friend Dan the dentist, a ladies man. Dan's insights persuaded me that being able to identify and interpret these signals will vastly improve your success with women. The idea that men go to a bar and obsess about the unattainable woman, while oblivious to signs of interest from other women, rings true, and fine tuning your perceptions will totally change your success.

Some of the signals that women give are unconscious, particularly when it comes to rapport. Your ability to identify these signals as clear indicators of interest are a roadmap to your eventual success.
