A Difficult Portrait of Race Relations

This very well written book is difficult to read objectively. The story takes place in 1948 when I was four years of age. I grew up in the south, only 100 miles west of Atlanta and I experienced many of the Jim Crow attitudes that the black policemen in the book went through. A word of caution to the potential reader: if seeing n***** in print offends you, think very carefully about reading this book.

Much of the story takes place on or near Auburn Avenue in Atlanta. On many occasions the author refers to this street as "Sweet Auburn", but he does not explain the reference. Auburn Avenue was the street on which many of the black intelligentsia lived. These people were familiar with English literature and poetry. In 1770, Oliver Goldsmith published a poem, "The Deserted Village", and the first line of the poem is, "Sweet Auburn, loveliest village of the plain". From this, the residents of Auburn Avenue began to refer to their street as "Sweet Auburn".

Unfortunately, after almost 70 years since the setting of this story, race relations have not improved in America all that much. I hope that this book and books like it will be a catalyst for the end of Jim Crow attitudes - not just in the south, but in the entire United States.

Grim times

Set in the late 1940s in the still dormant, old-ways Southern city, Atlanta, GA, this book is a penetrating, at times excruciating, examination of race relations in that era and the vigilante-like efforts of the white police force to suppress blacks, all the while often engaging in all manner of criminal activities. Atlanta, from some minimal do-gooder instinct, has just hired eight black policemen, all WWII vets, to patrol black neighborhoods. Of course, the prejudice remains: they cannot enter the main police station, cannot drive a patrol car, cannot make an arrest, cannot investigate a crime, cannot wear the uniform outside exact hours of the shift, etc. And the entire police force is overtly hostile towards them. That is the environment in which new officers Lucius Boggs and Tommy Smith must operate.

When they observe a middle-aged white man hit a utility pole, in so-called “darktown,” furthermore with a black girl as a passenger who seems to have been assaulted, all they can do is call in a white team. As happens all too often, they can do nothing when the man is allowed to go free and the female flees from the car. Days later when the girl is found shot dead and hidden in a garbage heap, Boggs and Smith make it their mission find justice for her. The hurdles and dangers that they face as they dig up information while attempting to fly under the radar would deter most anyone. The run afoul of an underground, ex-cop dirty works group. When their quest takes them outside of Atlanta, matters become even more harrowing.

It’s an okay mystery, but it’s even better sociology. There are any number of episodes, some incidental, that the author touches upon that make startling clear the immense difficulty of being black in a racist society. The author is not on soap-box – he doesn’t have to be.

Interesting history with predictable mystery

Darktown is an interesting look back on a troubling time in America. Set in post WWII Atlanta, it focuses on two of the eight rookie black cops who were hired. While on patrol, they stumble onto a drunk middle aged white man in a car with a young black woman. The man turns out to be former Atlanta PD and the woman turns up murdered a couple of days later. What follows is both a mystery and an historical commentary on a particularly difficult time.

The mystery holds few surprises. The police department is more interested in finding someone to accuse of the murder than solving it. The young black cops, Boggs and Smith, pursue it even though they lack the authority to conduct investigations. They are eventually assisted by a young white officer, Rakestraw, who is partnered with a racist cop, Dunlow. Rakestraw is interested in justice, but he is not exactly a crusader for racial equality.

While the mystery is fairly standard, the historical look at Atlanta is a little more interesting. The progress made in even hiring black officers is clouded by political motives and racism that is both deeply entrenched and institutionalized. The actions described in the book are horrific both to read, or in the case of the audiobook, listen to. The story may have been a little more successful with characters that were a little more sympathetic or less stereotypical. Nevertheless, the pressure that was in place both within and outside of the black community on the success of the experiment of hiring black officers kept the stakes high. Even the day to day obstacles both to doing their jobs and living their lives was illuminating.

The mystery is eventually solved, and justice of a sort is dispensed. What was lacking, was any sort of indication of what a path forward might be. A deeply racist south was portrayed, but there was no real sign that there was a way for anything to really change. The hiring of black officers in and of itself was portrayed more as a political expediency than as a step towards progress.

The audiobook was narrated by Andre Holland who did an outstanding job with the characters. Holland made you feel like you were in 1948 Atlanta and effectively conveyed the frustration, anger and weariness of the characters. The pace was steady and the mood tense.

Love this book

Love this book! I wanted it for the orangutan pattern but all the patterns in the book are amazing. I own all 4 of the zoomigurumi books and they are all very good. Directions are clear and I haven't found any missing steps or unclear directions yet like you find in some amigurumi books. Some patterns require more skill but simpler patterns are listed first and they increase in difficulty. If you are comfortable with following written crochet directions and know simple stitches then anything in this book is achievable for you.

This is such a cute assortment of crochet amigurumi patterns. I have the other three books as with this one, the pattern are easy to follow and have nice pictures. A joy to read and even more fun to work up the patterns.

Private Islands Review

This beautiful book offers a vast amount of aerial photographs and information about private islands around the world--from celebrity to residence-exclusive, to islands available for rent--each paradise has a unique geo-makeup, history, and of course, aesthetic architecture.

I love travelling and the open sea, so "Private Islands" is my interpretation of an international-island-guide for the luxury tourist. There's a world map included, pinpointing where the islands are located, and section that displays all the wonderful islands with resort spots for travellers. Skorpios on the Ionian Sea is one of the prettiest in my opinion--with such pretty greenery. (We learn in the book it's owned by the billionaire Onassis family.)

As an admirer of boats and lighthouse structures (and their historical appeal), I'm certainly amazed by the fact that this book showcases a total of 8 islands with lighthouses.

If you're a travel-enthusiast and love photography, this book is definitely for you. Just looking at the photos and reading the history brings me to a lovely, dream-like place...with every page like relaxing on an private island itself.

Two Different Views

The idea of a book of island pictures is enticing, exciting, and inviting. Casually flipping through the more than 200 pages and almost 100 islands, I was struck by the exotic and beautiful locations. Unfortunately, for me, this book did not live up to all those expectations. My wife, however, enjoyed the book very much.

The World of Private Islands is a compilation of photographs mostly taken by Farhad Vladi with text by Martina Matthiesen. The islands are grouped by style, Islands with Lighthouses, Celebrity Islands, Atolls, etc., not geography. Each island is presented in a two page spread, with a paragraph or two in English and German. The book is large format, roughly 10 x 12, and many photographs span two pages. The paper is very heavy, the printing and binding is perfection.

For a time, I enjoyed dreaming about these islands. They are beautiful and the thought of maybe going to one or two of them (the Thousand Island area is inexpensive and very accessible) was a nice dream. I'm very happy, the islands I know and love were not included in this book - they are wonderful secrets that publicity would ruin. I am predisposed to love islands - some of the more memorable times in my life were spent on beautiful secluded islands. I love Paul Theroux - somebody that is an expert at island living and an incredible author.

The difficulty I have with this book is the quality of the photographs. From the introduction and photo credits, Vladi has personally taken most of these pictures. Sadly, they do not hold up well to the extra large format of this book. I have become accustom to the incredible high quality of TeNeues publishing, and the source photographs fall short. The first few seem remarkable, but then a formula shows up - an aerial view of the island, a close up of a beach, and the equivalent of a real estate listing image of the house or resort on the island. Most of the images are grainy and soft. If I had to guess, these look like higher speed 35mm color negative film shot through a helicopter window - not the most high resolution method of photographing these incredible locations. I am being critical of the photographs; I am a photographer and have studied photographers for a very long time. My wife recognized what I said after I mentioned it to her, but did not see them as lower quality images.

The other part I find difficult with this book, Vladi is the owner and founder of a company that sells and rents islands. His introductory text talks about how he has been "involved in over 2,000 island transactions and countless island lettings..." After island 30, it began to look like the book is more of an MLS real estate advertisement, than an idyllic escape to dream land. I could live with the commercial connection, if the images were more on par with National Geographic or any of the incredible photographers TeNeues has published.

I guess I was expecting a book with more depth, more insight. I certainly expected higher quality photographs. If, on the other hand, I had expected something that looks like the Private Island website, or a listing of places I could rent; well this book is spectacular.

As a counterpoint to my view of this book, my wife enjoyed it very much. She is an Earth Science instructor. Her first impression was, oh no, another expensive, over the top, not sustainable buying and renting of paradise. About half way through, she started adding Post-It tags to identify her favorite islands. By the time she finished the book; she had a big smile and said that this is a wonderful book. Maybe paradise hadn't been as spoiled as she first thought.

Daydreams are made of this

This is the perfect book for days when work is crazy or when you just need a change of pace. It's the ideal book for imagining yourself on a warm, sunny, uncrowded beach with a drink in your hand staring out over miles of turquoise water or beautiful landfalls in the distance. Or on rocky cliffs, not far from your own castle, holding a hot drink while watching the waves crash against the shore. I want to go on vacation! If only I had a gazillion dollars so I could afford to rent (or buy!) one of these luxurious islands.

This large coffee table book, 12.8 x 10.1 x 1.1 inches is substantial. The pages are heavy, glossy quality stock. The photographer, Farhad Vladi is the founder and owner of the company Vladi Private Islands which the world's leading island brokerage company. He sells and rents out private islands, island-related properties and island shares around the world. Over the years, he has assembled an archive covering over 12,000 islands all over the world, probably the world's largest archive on privately-owned islands. He photographs private islands from a helicopter, like those in this book. The only thing that I thought could have been better about the photos, is that some could have been a little higher resolution. That's not to say that they were fuzzy or anything, just that some of the little tiny details nosy people like me want to see were hard to pick out in some photographs. Considering he's flying around in a helicopter and probably taking pictures through the glass of the windshield (while moving) they were more than acceptable to me.

There is a map in the front of the book showing all the destinations, some of which I had never heard of. The book was divided into sections which I liked, because he divided them up the way I would have. The sections are:

Exclusively for Rent
Islands with Charming Residences
Islands with Lighthouses
Islands with Their Own Airstrips
Atolls
Islands with Resorts
Treasure Islands
XXL Islands
XXS Islands
Lake and River Islands

My favorites were the islands with castles and the ones with the charming residences. The Ile De Costaeres in Brittany, France and the Boldt Castle on the St. Lawrence River in New York were the ones I spent the most time looking at. There's even one called Isle of Gigha in Scotland that Mick Jagger tried to buy but the 156 inhabitants beat him on the price. It's the little blurbs like this on the pages with the photos that make the book fun to read about while you're drooling over the pictures. This book would make a great gift for anyone who likes to dream.

The only parenting book I need

After LOVING "Baby 411" I decided to purchase this book when my daughter turned one, and it did not disappoint.
The best feature is how quickly addressed issues are. My girl started to experience separation anxiety and I had no clue how to deal with it, but "Toddler 411" has been a Godsend. Instead of a long, wordy explanation, this book covered the issue in one paragraph!
I highly recommend it for parents who don't have the time to sit down to read a parenting chapter book (because, really, if you have a toddler in your house you won't be having much down time at all).

I originally purchased the Baby 411 book in this series when my sister and brother-in-law were expecting. My colleagues in pediatrics highly recommended it during my clinical rotations. My sister loved the Baby 411 book so much that she asked me to buy this book for her as an early Christmas present for my little nephew. In referring to this book, I jokingly told my sister "Babies originally don't come with instruction manuals, but this series comes pretty close!" A great way to save you time from calling your pediatrician about all the little questions that come up.

Must have. Great reference to have on hand, really helps to make the doctor visits you need to have more concise. Great info like questions you should ask, what might be behavioral vs. Medical, when should you call the doctor, and even stuff like omg my crazy little one just fell and hit their head (quick guide for getting them safely to the doctor and when it might just be a bump).
I especially love the nutritional information and tips.
It's written by a doctor who is also a mom which makes it perfect because you can tell she understands worrying about your kid and wanting the best for them, while knowing medically what is best (she even admits when these two lines of thought may seem in opposition to each other, and takes the time to explain why)
I recommend this to anyone with a toddler

Simply Profound and Profoundly Simple

DISCLAIMER : I am not a fan of the self-help category. I couldn't care less who moved my cheese and I am generally cynical about the work of self-professed gurus who can boil success down to a few easy-to-follow steps. But . . . . this is the real deal.

The book sneaks up on you as it tells a simple story of a young sailor and the lessons he learns from a time-tested Captain. Mills wrote this for his 4 boys, inspired by the form of the "just in case" letters he would compose before missions as a Navy SEAL. The story weaves in personal vignettes that reinforce each of the 8 steps of his formula for becoming Unstoppable. Each story is genuine and personal, honest and compelling, whether about overcoming asthma to row for the Navy or starting his company. Most importantly, he cares most about the reader, about helping the next generation of young people overcome limitations and fears to achieve their dreams.

This spirit of generosity is infectious because of its authenticity. Read it. It will change you. Then pass it to someone you care about.

Alden's book should be required reading in High School.

This book should become required reading in High School curriculums. Anyone who reads this book will garner easy to understand tools that will serve them well to accomplish any dream or goal one has in life. Not only do I believe in Alden's approach to being unstoppable in life, he does it in an highly entertaining way with a story like feel.

I own a small company that just missed the Inc 500 a year ago, 574 to be exact. While reading Alden's book, I found I already do certain things well, identified others that I have avoided doing (to my detriment), and things I had never thought to do (and should have been doing). Alden's book has helped me clearly define my areas of weakness and has empowered me with a new found motivation to change bad habits and create better ones.

The Bottom Line: Living by Alden's UPERSIST Code will make you Unstoppable if you NEGU (Never Ever Give Up).

Learn jQuery UI from the horses mouth! It won't get better than this.

I got a copy of this book and really enjoyed reading this. Its a very practical book and code snippets and concepts can be directly applied to your work. The author has given in-depth coverage on widget and advanced UI customization.

This is a very handy book for those involved in heavy JavaScript development. Besides there is a good coverage on poly-filling HTML5 with jQuery UI.

If you are working with jQuery UI in your project then this book is a must reference for your developers. It will save you lot of time and the coverage on widget factory is a treat.

This book can be your go-to guide for putting jQuery UI into action

TJ VanToll had two straightforward goals in mind when he decided to write this nicely prepared book: "I wanted to write about how to use the jQuery UI components in real-world usage scenarios and applications. I also wanted to tackle the tough questions for jQuery UI users. [Such as] Why should you use the jQuery UI datepicker instead of the native date picker included in HTML5? How do you use jQuery UI on mobile devices, especially in low bandwidth situations?"

According to the jQuery Foundation, "jQuery is a fast, small, and feature-rich JavaScript library. It makes things like HTML document traversal and manipulation, event handling, animation, and Ajax much simpler with an easy-to-use API that works across a multitude of browsers. With a combination of versatility and extensibility, jQuery has changed the way that millions of people write JavaScript."

The problem with popularity, of course, is that jQuery became widely employed soon after it was introduced in 2006. Users quickly created a flood of jQuery plugins that, Van Toll writes, "had inconsistent APIs, and often had little or no documentation. Because of these problems, the jQuery team wanted to provide an official set of plugins in a centralized location. In September 2007 they created a new library with these plugins--jQuery UI."

He adds: "From a high level, jQuery UI was, and still is, a collection of plugins and utilities that build on jQuery. But dig deeper and you find a set of consistent, well-documented, themeable building blocks to help you create everything from small websites to highly complex web applications. Unlike jQuery plugins, the plugins and utilities in jQuery UI are supported by the jQuery Foundation. The book is structured into three parts, encompassing 12 chapters. And it assumes readers have at least basic experience with JavaScript, CSS, and jQuery.

Part One's chapters introduce jQuery UI and "the ins and outs of widgets...the core building blocks of jQuery UI."

Part Two's chapters offer "a comprehensive look at the components of jQuery UI: twelve jQuery UI widgets (chapters 3-4), five jQuery
UI interactions (chapter 5), numerous jQuery UI effects (chapter 6), and the jQuery UI CSS framework (chapter 7)." VanToll explains how each component works and shows how to apply the knowledge to real-world applications. The example projects include: building complex webforms with jQueryUI; using layout and utility widgets; adding interaction to interfaces; and using built-in and customized themes to provide "a consistent look to all widgets."

Part Three focuses on "Customization and advanced usage." Here, VanToll explores such topics as using the widget factory to create custom widgets, preparing applications for production, and building a flight-search application "at real-world scale." In the final chapter, he takes us under jQuery's hood "to dig into a series of utilities, methods, and properties intended for more advanced usage of the library."

The name says it all

The name says it all: the book is something you could put into action and apply to your web application development immediately.

I was working on a project to integrate some web applications when I got a copy of "jQuery UI in Action". Since the vendor's applications UI is using some specific HTML template system that seems clunky, ugly and hard to customize, I decided to give jQuery UI a try. It really made a difference after I followed the examples in the book as I was able to significantly simply the logic of my script while making the theme similar to the old web application the project is replacing.

The author has been using and developing jQuery UI for more than five years and it shows his in-depth understanding of jQuery UI in a easy-to-follow way of description. He used a few real-world examples to explain different aspects of jQuery UI that could be easily used for one's web applications. I ending up using a lot for my project from his datapicker part of the doctor's appointment example.

All the examples are very easy to follow with detailed annotations. The author stated in the foreword he tried not to make this a copy of API document but rather some real-world applications. The book definitely has achieved the goal.

What I also like about this book is that the author is very frank in comparing jQuery UI vs HTML5 and also the pros and cons of jQuery UI. And I found its appendices are quite useful. I usually use FireBug for testing my javascript but the online testing tools the author recommended definitely helps.

The book does not have too much information about generating dynamic data from database on server side. But that should not be considered a shortcoming as it is not directly related to jQuery UI at all and you could find tons of information for that elsewhere easily. In addition, the book does provide an example to use jQuery UI vs. GitHub web api.
