The Curse of Brahma, by Jagmohan Bhanver

In a fit of rage, Brahma banishes his star pupil from Swarglok. Mortally wounded, and anguished at Brahma s unfair punishment, the man struggles to survive in tamastamah prabha, the hell of hells. In time, he becomes the Dark Lord; the most feared figure in Pataal Lok, who swears to destroy Brahma.

Brahma s curse sets in motion a chain of events that threatens to alter the fate of the three worlds. Vasudev, the brave Prince of Bateshwar, becomes the hunter of Asura assassins; his closest friend, Kansa, almost dies saving his sister, Devki, from a group of deadly monsters; and the most valiant kings in Mrityulok turn over to the dark side, driven by forces beyond their control. Only one person threatens the Dark Lord s well-laid plans Devki, the beautiful princess of Madhuvan, who is destined to give birth to the warrior Krishna.

The Curse of Brahma explores the prophesy behind Krishna s birth and is a thrilling read.

With its pacy narrative and use of thoroughly researched mythological events from ancient India, Jagmohan Bhanver weaves a compelling tale of love and sacrifice.

The author is a prolific speaker and the book has an arresting cover that will stand out against other such books in the genre.

A promising and enjoyable read!
By Njkinny
I enjoy reading Indian mythology based stories and when I heard about this one, I knew I just had to check it out.

The title and cover are intriguing and enigmatic. Managing to successfully capture my attention, I was further lured in by the blurb that promised an interesting read.

The Curse of Brahma by Jagmohan Bhanver, at first glance, looks like it is the story of Lord Krishna but this isn't the case. Here we get the story of Krishna from his Uncle Kansa's perspective along with a parallel story line of the star pupil of Lord Brahma who was exiled by his teacher and who went on to become the most feared evil Lord.

The story starts in a promising manner and I was instantly engaged in the action. The author has a fluid style of writing and managed to create a visual of the scenes and events in my mind. Successful in maintaining my interest and suspense, I stayed glued to my seat but while he managed to deliver a engrossing story in most parts, there are also parts where the story lagged and can make the reader feel bored.

The plot and the execution are promising but the story could have been told in a more crisp manner. Maybe, we'll see it in the following parts of this trilogy. For the present, I enjoyed reading the book and loved revisiting loved mythological characters and reading their stories from a fresh perspective.

I don't want to give away too much of the story with you but if you love reading about Gods and want to visit a time that was magical and so very different from our present world then give this book a chance. 3.5 out of 5 to The Curse of Brahma from me. I look forward to reading the other parts of this trilogy and feel Jagmohan is a talented author, whose books I would be checking out in the future.

MYTHOLOGY RETOLD
By Geeta
I READ, I FELT

Story-line- Interesting and thought-provoking, the book blends facts with fiction beautifully. Kansa one of the most hated characters of Indian mythology, is depicted in a different light making one empathize with him. Another important character, in fact the main protagonist i.e.Amartya Kalyanesu, also sets us thinking. One wonders who is evil, the one who’s acts do not augur well for others like the Dark Lord or the one who is actually the root cause of all troubles i.e. Lord Brahma in this novel? The book is in fact an eye-opener. One realizes that neither the Dark Lord nor Kansa were evil. In fact they were pure of heart. It was circumstances or should I say the deeds of others that made them turn evil. In short the story draws our attention to the havoc that just one person’s folly or lack of control on one’s anger can wreak.

The story has some interesting twists and turns that keep the reader bound. The chain of events also brings to light some stories hitherto unknown to many. There are some portions where one can’t help a smile light up the face. Devaki’s undying love for brother Kansa and the latter’s affection and care for the former moisten the eyes at places. One is forced to rethink about ones perception of Kansa as a tyrant. He evokes sympathy at places.

One portion that I particularly liked was that which has Lord Shiva chiding Lord Brahma when the latter comes to him with a request to destroy the Dark Lord. It felt real and down-to-earth. Here Lord Brahma’s position is that of the errant child. We can literally visualise his discomfort when interacting with Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva dons the role of the father figure who takes his ward to task but at the same time guides him and assures him that he’s there to help him clear the mess that the latter has created, should the situation demand.

Characterization- Wonderful! The characters are presented with all their imperfections thus making it easy for one to relate to them, their actions and thought process. Even Lord Brahma the creator, is not spared. His anger, his worries, his discomfort all make him easily relatable. The only thing that left me confused at times was the sheer size of the cast.

Language & Pace- Language is simple, crisp and lucid. One can’t help but marvel at the way the author has woven the story. As the story progresses one can clearly visualise the scenes and actions unfold. Pace is perfect. At no point did I feel my interest wane.

There is no other character that I hated as much as him
By Kavita
The success of a book is ascertained by the fact that the reader is able to visualize the story as happening in front of their eyes. In this case I was transported to the era of the Dark Lord. I felt every emotion that the characters were going through acutely;the anger of the Dark Lord at the betrayal faced by him, the desperation of Kansa, the pain of Ugrasen and much more. Kansa deserves a special mention here. While growing up, I have read the Mahabharata countless times. There is no other character that I hated as much as him. He was the man who killed all his sisters children. But, after reading the 'Curse of Brahma' I felt only sorrow at his fate. A man who is an unwitting victim of someone else's machinations.The point is that the author's characterization is so powerful that it has been able to erode years of conditioning.
The book also throws up a number of pertinent questions. Is evil really evil and vice versa or is life a play of events where we are playing a part. To summarize, it is an intense read, great characterization and an example of classy writing. If I say anything more, I may reveal the plot which will be a gross disservice to the author. So, go ahead and read for yourself, for it will be time worth spent.

Minimalist design--maximum style!

In the middle of the last century, a new generation of designers sought to render furniture to its most essential forms. In doing so, they created timeless designs that defined Mid-Century Modern Style. From the sleek geometric lines of Bauhaus-inspired design to the sculptural shapes of Danish masters, this furniture captured the imagination of the era and enjoys growing popularity today.

Now for the first time, author Michael Crow has carefully detailed 29 seminal works by the era's foremost designers, including Hans Wenger, Finn Juhl and George Nelson. At their best, these spare, often sculptural designs transcend their period and are at home in a variety of settings. Each piece has been selected carefully so it can be built in an average workshop. Inside this book you'll find:

  • More than 100 drawings with exploded views, elevations and details for projects to fit every room in your house.
  • Practical advice on wood selection, hardware sources and contruction and finishing techniques.
  • Two step-by-step project builds.
  • A richly illustrated historical overview tracing the evolution of the style and exploring the designers and makers who shaped it.

For Experienced Woodworkers Only
By PurelyNicole
The beginning of the book details out techniques, tools, and design philosophy behind these pieces. That kind of information is always interesting to me. The first two projects have some direction to them. After that, you're on your own with only a shop drawing and a cutlist to guide you. The designs the book has is great, but it is assuming you have a solid background in woodworking. I'm currently building the nesting tables from the book as part of a woodworking class at my local art center. If it weren't for having someone with years of experience guiding me through this project I would not be successful.

Most of these projects are also made to be assembled out of solid wood, not plywood. (Although maybe that's my limited experience talking.) If you're looking to build your own Mid-Century Style furniture, but need a bit more guidance, I recommend Handmade Modern.

Update: I've attached photos of the tables I made from this book.

It's a decent book but not the end all of design books. Leans heavily towards the Danish designers. the drawings are Ok but leave some things to be desired. as an example the chair featured on the cover while having many measurements lack the angles needed for the legs and back. one has to guess and try to figure the angle by combining several other measurements. the same holds true for any piece that tapers. the botom measurement is given but many times the top measurement is missing or is buried somewhere.

By Adam Felker
The book provides only the most broad-strokes study of mid-century modern furniture. The drawings seem to be inaccurate or incomplete (I noticed at least one drawing had pieces entirely missing from the cutlist). Another annoyance is that the renderings of the projects have the grain-lines oriented in the wrong direction. If the pieces were built in the fashion illustrated, they'd be weakened.

"An extraordinary volume that provides nothing less than a detailed cognitive mapping of the terrain for everyone who wants to engage in radical politics."—Slavoj Žižek, author of Living in the End Times

“Keywords for Radicals recognizes that language is both a weapon and terrain of struggle, and that all of us committed to changing our social and material reality, to making a world justice-rich and oppression-free, cannot drop words such as ‘democracy,’ ‘occupation,’ ‘colonialism,’ ‘race,’ ‘sovereignty,’ or ‘love’ without a fight. —Robin D. G. Kelley, author of Freedom Dreams: The Black Radical Imagination

"From its thought-provoking Introduction though its energizing accounts of the tensions underlying our most prized concepts, Keywords for Radicals will be indispensable to any scholar or activist who is serious about critique and change."—Stephen Duncombe, editor of Cultural Resistance Reader

“A primer for a new era of political protest.” —Jack Halberstam, author of Female Masculinity

“This keywords upgrade puts powerful weapons into revolutionaries' hands. Unexpected entries expand into new terrain.… Indispensable.” —Jodi Dean, author of The Communist Horizon

In Keywords (1976), Raymond Williams devised a "vocabulary" that reflected the vast social transformations of the post-war period. He revealed how these transformations could be grasped by investigating changes in word usage and meaning. Keywords for Radicals—part homage, part development—asks: What vocabulary might illuminate the social transformations marking our own contested present? How do these words define the imaginary of today's radical left?

With insights from dozens of scholars and troublemakers, Keywords for Radicals explores the words that shape our political landscape. Each entry highlights a term's contested variations, traces its evolving usage, and speculates about what its historical mutations can tell us. More than a glossary, this is a crucial study of the power of language and the social contradictions hidden within it.

Probably as simple as a will can be
By Picturesque Music
BRIEF COMMENTS

I chose my title carefully. Unfortunately, if you're looking for a simple page to briefly outline who takes care of your kids and where your modest possessions go, you won't find it here, nor do I suspect will you find it anywhere if it is to be legally proper.

I have no legal training and so cannot say whether this will kit is legally sound, but it sure has a lot of legalese and seems well thought out. Alpha Publications claims to have been in business for several decades, as well.

If you're worth $2M you probably can spend $500 on a consult with an attorney; I suspect this kit isn't for you.

WHAT'S IN THE KIT

The kit has a ~30 page instruction booklet. You don't actually *have* to read this. I would peruse it once, thoough, and it's really not too bad a read. There are another 30 pages or so of example filled-out forms. I didn't read these, but they seem a good idea for those interested..

The will itself consists of ~20 individual sheets. *You won't use many of these*. When you get, in the instructions, to the section where it tells you in very clear detail which sheets you need for your specific situation, it will tell you which sheets you need and which you don't.

CREATING YOUR WILL

Once you open this up the natural inclination may be to groan and throw it on your dresser, where it will stay for five months, then end up in the trash (maybe this is why so few people have wills). Fight that inclination. Once you get started you realize this really isn't so terribly difficult after all. So here is what you do:

1) Read the instructions that explain how wills work.
2) Go to the instructions' chapter 8--the "step by step" guide.
3) With the steps, identify which sheets you need.
4) Photocopy these sheets at least once. Your spouse will need to fill out their own copy and, lacking a spouse, you may make a mistake filling this out, or want to update in the future anyway

In my case I ended up having only around 8 sheets/forms, and 6 of them were nothing but signing my name and checking a box or two.

FROM #1 INTERNATIONAL BESTSELLING AUTHOR SYLVIA DAY
The final chapter in the global blockbuster Crossfire quintet

Gideon Cross. Falling in love with him was the easiest thing I’ve ever done. It happened instantly. Completely. Irrevocably.

Marrying him was a dream come true. Staying married to him is the fight of my life. Love transforms. Ours is both a refuge from the storm and the most violent of tempests. Two damaged souls entwined as one.

We have bared our deepest, ugliest secrets to one another. Gideon is the mirror that reflects all my flaws…and all the beauty I couldn’t see. He has given me everything. Now, I must prove I can be the rock, the shelter for him that he is for me. Together, we could stand against those who work so viciously to come between us.

But our greatest battle may lie within the very vows that give us strength. Committing to love was only the beginning. Fighting for it will either set us free…or break us apart.

Heartbreakingly and seductively poignant, One with You is the breathlessly awaited finale to the Crossfire saga, the searing love story that has captivated millions of readers worldwide.

From Publishers Weekly
Prolific erotic romance author Day's fifth Crossfire novel brings the story of Gideon and Eva to a satisfying conclusion. The couple, now wed, are attempting to keep their marriage secret until they can celebrate with their loved ones, but multiple threats by vindictive people from their pasts undermine that effort. Savvy in business and social media, the two lovers cleverly combat their enemies while also managing to nourish their personal relationship through therapy, friends, and steady integration into each other's families. Narrating their stories in alternating chapters, Eva and Gideon relate their explosive physical attraction, their appreciation of how they help each other heal old emotional wounds, and their ever-increasing mutual trust. In one particularly moving scene, when Gideon desperately begs Eva to believe that he did not cheat on her despite what looks like incriminating evidence, her simple "I believe you" offers a stark contrast to his childhood experience of being disbelieved when he reported abuse. Glamorous people, swanky settings, steamy sex, and passionate married love make this a heartwarming, gratifying conclusion to the series. (Apr.)\n

Review
"Gideon and Eva's complicated relationship plays out with hurt, passion, obsession and most importantly, love. Day's writing is flawless and carries readers on the journey of these two broken characters toward each other and the all-consuming emotions that leap out of the book. A wonderful story written by a master storyteller!" - RT Book Reviews, Five Star Gold

"By not holding back any punches and truly saving the best for last, Sylvia Day has given these characters the ending they've always deserved, the ending I've always hoped for, the perfect conclusion to a story that remained poignant and electrifying until the very last page. And even though nothing could have ever truly prepared me for the end of a series that has meant so much to me for so long, a spectacular send-off such as this helps in no small measure." - Natasha is a Book Junkie, 6 Stars

"This was one of my most highly-anticipated books of the year and it delivered everything I'd hoped for and more!! ...I was left with such a full-filled and satisfied feeling that I couldn't be happier with the way their story concluded. Sylvia Day really did justice to this series because the ending was gorgeous. I truly loved it and highly recommend the Crossfire series to everyone as a top favorite!!" - Aestas Book Blog, Top Favorite

"What I loved best about this finale was how intimate and emotional it felt. We get that wonderful happy ending we've been longing for, cheering for, but their happily ever after is just beginning. They'll surely encounter more difficulties, as well as celebrate many, many moments of happiness. And perhaps that's what I most loved about this book... it may be the end of the series, but it's not the end of their story, and that's a wonderful thing to think about." - Vilma's Book Blog, 5 Stars

Really....that's what we waited for???
By SRKnight
Well, we've waited a long time for this ending...and to say I was disappointed may be an understatement. I certainly expected after this long, drawn out wait, that Eva and Gideon would get an amazing ending. They didn't, not even in the Epilogue. Most of the book was like reading the first four books on repeat...Eva wanting Gideon to give her more, open up. While Gideon always having a melt down because of his need to protect Eva and the fact that he didn't feel like he was the center of her world.

**Spoiler Alert**
I think the really weird "what???" was the storyline turning to Monica and her life, or rather prior life. The explanation was rushed and didn't add a lot to the story.

If you are looking for "What happened to Cary/Trey/Baby Mama", you won't get that answer. There is no conclusion there. Who knows if she has the baby, if there really is a baby, if the baby is really Cary's??? Trey is around but not in the picture at all. Cary was just kind of left in the wind.

Gideon and his mother's relationship never resolved. There was a hint of why his brother Christopher hated him so much, but really no resolution there either.

At one point, Eva shows up with a dog, like Gideon is the type to have a dog, any dog. But she shows up with what I assume is a small dog, a puppy from the description. Somehow, the dog has the miraculous sixth sense of a well trained, much older, much bigger, therapy dog for people with PTSD. This dog knows to wake Gideon and even at one point Eva from bad dreams and comfort them. This dog pops in and out of the story like an after thought. Another storyline without a lot of substance.

And of course, there was the usual pop up of the scorned females Gideon had been with, constantly being thrown in Eva's face, and leaving us with more questions. Was the tell all book written? What happened to Anne after her latest stunt? More snips of small pop up storylines that were left incomplete.

In the end, I was left with one big question mark and disappointment. I truly believed Sylvia Day would finish this series off in grand fashion, showing Gideon and Eva has a strong, powerful couple that fiercely ruled New York. Instead, she went with Groundhog Day and nonsense.

THAT'S how it ends?!? WTF!
By Jennifer
I'm a little pi$$ed off. Not going to lie. I was overjoyed to find One With You on my Kindle this morning. It picks up right where we left off in the previous book. The story had me hooked until 85%. Then suddenly the focus shifts from Gideon and Eva to Monica, Eva's mom. The rest of the book focuses 90% on her and her 'story.' The end is where I got just plain mad. SO many unanswered questions!!! What were you thinking Sylvia! What happens to Corinne? Was the baby actually Cary's? Did Tatiana have it? Does he reconcile with Trey? How could you leave us hanging like that?!? It's cruel! And what the eff kind of epilogue was that?!? ONE MONTH LATER?!? That's IT?!? I'm so disappointed!!

So Disappointed - Total letdown
By P. Talley
I came back to my review with the intention of deleting it and writing a new review. I was one of the first group of people to write a review, and I didn't want to give away any spoilers. But there were several people the review helped, so I'll just edit. I will tell you that I went back and skimmed through the book again. If I had rewritten the review, it would now only receive a 1 star rating.

So, I'll keep some of my original review at the end. But here is my new review. Only the very beginning of the book is where I used a spoiler. I didn't give anything away about the body of the story.

One mild spoiler from the first section of the book.

NEW REVIEW:

The one thing I was happy about is that the doctor immediately deflated Eva's ego by telling her what she was doing was emotional blackmail. Especially since Eva had just accused her mother of the same thing when Monica got upset until she got her way with Stanton. And Eva was very hateful toward her mother.

Also, she was so sure that she was right, and by forcing Gideon to share something he wasn't emotionally ready to share, that she had fixed the marriage, because, in her mind, it was him that needed fixing. She just needed to hurt him in order to get her way. When she found out (and how stupid was she really?) that she had pushed him into a corner by blackmailing him, she got all teary-eyed. It goes from there.

I feel like that should have been the end of book 4 actually.

Then book 5 should have picked up a few months later with Eva working at Crossfire with Gideon. Then she could continue her career goals while contributing to her own company with her husband. That way she could show her intelligence and strength. And they could have faced their enemies together and tied up all those plot lines: LanCorp, Corinne and the tell-all book, the reporter, Christopher, Dr. and Ann Lucas, etc. We could have seen her still interacting with her friends: Mark and Stephen's marriage, her friend who was abused, Stephens sister, etc.

Cary was supposed to move into the apartment at the penthouse. We could have followed his relationship with Eva and Gideon, and found out what happened with him and Trey, as well as the model who was supposed to be pregnant. Was she pregnant? Or did she have it aborted? Was the baby actually Cary's? Would Cary and Trey actually have a chance at a real relationship?

We could have seen Eva standing by her husband's side while he finally confronted and came to terms with his family. His nightmares weren't going to stop until he worked out the years of betrayal he had carried around with him. We needed to find out why Christopher hated him so much. There were also tidbits in the other stories about a history of Christopher's behavior that went far beyond the few things we were told about. Those needed to come to light and be dealt with.

That's what book 5 should have been about. How is Eva standing by her husband's side? How is she stronger and smarter? How is she going forward with her career? All those loose ends from all the unresolved plots should have been taken care of - and in a rational, believable way.

Unfortunately, if you're looking for any of these things in book 5, you will be sorely disappointed.

What you will see is lazy writing, irrational story resolutions, plot holes, and characters who only vaguely resemble the people you have come to know in the previous four books.

~~~~~~~~
Some reviewers complained because they felt nothing was resolved. My feeling was that the author was giving us a big "just kidding" - all that drama in the past 4 books - no big deal. It's nothing to worry about. Forget about it.
You might as well. The author did. All the things that were insurmountable in the last few books weren't even worth a moment's worry or thought to the characters any longer.
Lancorp? - just kidding - they weren't really a problem
Corrine - No worries. She's really no big deal. Tell-all book? Moving on; nothing to see here.
And on and on. All that drama we were waiting to be tackled - just wasn't. Not a worry any longer. Not a problem in their lives. Just not there.
Another reviewer pointed out that Gideon and Eva played around with mild BDSM in the other books. Nothing hardcore, but spanking and the swing. That was never brought up again. It wasn't part of their sex life. Did he just take down the swing and toss it in a closet? It suddenly wasn't part of his personality any longer. Why? Now they're Mr. and Mrs. Vanilla Sex living happily ever after on his money? She couldn't care less about a career? Maybe accepting an award for the company would be okay, or commenting on a game the company is putting out? And she's all satisfied? Were those even the same two people in the Crossfire Series?
There were actually a couple of places where there could have been angst or a bit of drama or plot - but the first incident was cleared up in a couple of paragraphs. The second incident was cleared up in a couple of pages.
And the ending plot twist was lame and ridiculous. It barely made sense. Once the reviews start really coming in, and spoilers are given out, I would be interested if anyone can explain to me how anything about that scenario was logical.
The Epilogue ?
I'll ask the question again - Who were these people and what did she do with Eva and Gideon?!
Indigenous Resurgence in the Contemporary Caribbean: Amerindian Survival and RevivalFrom Brand: Peter Lang International Academic Publis
Views of the modern Caribbean have been constructed by a fiction of the absent aboriginal. Yet, all across the Caribbean Basin, individuals and communities are reasserting their identities as indigenous peoples, from Carib communities in the Lesser Antilles, the Garifuna of Central America, and the Tano of the Greater Antilles, to members of the Caribbean diaspora. Far from extinction, or permanent marginality, the region is witnessing a resurgence of native identification and organization. This is the only volume to date that focuses concerted attention on a phenomenon that can no longer be ignored. Territories covered include Belize, Cuba, Dominica, the Dominican Republic, French Guiana, Guyana, St. Vincent, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago, and the Puerto Rican diaspora. Writing from a range of contemporary perspectives on indigenous presence, identities, the struggle for rights, relations with the nation-state, and globalization, fourteen scholars, including four indigenous representatives, contribute to this unique testament to cultural survival. This book will be indispensable to students of Caribbean history and anthropology, indigenous studies, ethnicity, and globalization.
Review
A collection of fourteen remarkably diverse and stimulating essays, this book represents a new milestone in scholarly research and writing about the Caribbean. These authors are not armchair specialists, but the people who have collected the evidence from first hand experience. They are the participant observers of indigenous population persistence, a phenomenon reluctantly recognized by many traditional scholars and regional governments. ‘Indigenous Resurgence’ reports on the most recent and current data and concepts in a subject field that has assumed global significance, and sparks a variety of controversy. (Helen Hornbeck Tanner, Senior Research Fellow, The Newberry Library, Chicago)
The indigenous peoples of the Caribbean are widely supposed to have been extinct since shortly after Columbus’s arrival in the area. Despite a huge loss of population, they never were extinct, just ‘persisting in quiet remembrance,’ as one contributor to this book memorably puts it, but over the last twenty-five years their presence has been increasingly felt. Now, at last, in this volume, we have a project that charts their resurgence in fourteen varied and fascinating chapters. Expertly marshaled by editor Maximilian C. Forte, these chapters range across the entire Caribbean, from Cuba to Suriname, from the Dominican Republic to Belize, from Trinidad to Dominica. Their authors explain the various reasons for the growing contemporary understanding of indigenous survival in the Caribbean over the second half of the twentieth century: how colonial practices erased indigenous identities as a matter of political economy; how, in matching fashion, indigenous resistance often adopted the tactic of avoiding the state; how local creole practices (domestic and agricultural) are now being better understood as indigenous cultural survivals; and how the new understanding of descent given by DNA analysis has taken over from crude accountings of blood quanta. Contemporary indigenous identity has changed over five hundred years just as much as other cultural or ethnic identities have, and this book offers an excellent guide as to how transformation should be thought of as survival rather than loss. The general cultural and intellectual climate has changed dramatically in recent years. There is now a better appreciation of the possibility of multiple personal identities relating to multiple ancestries, and censuses now tend to work through self-ascription rather than ‘expert’ opinion as to someone else’s ethnicity. While some of the stigma of being indigenous in the Caribbean has disappeared over recent years, the actual advantages are still zero, so it’s intriguing that some of the pride in being so has returned, or at least begun to become more public, as Caribbean indigenous peoples begin to draw on material and symbolic resources from a broader world culture in order to reproduce their indigeneity in some of the ways so well analyzed here. But there is more than just scholarly analysis: throughout this volume resonate the voices of three particular indigenous leaders, Panchito Ramrez Rojas (eastern Cuba), Ricardo Bharath Hernandez (Trinidad), and Joseph Palacio (Belize), all eloquently testifying to what survival and resurgence might really mean. (Peter Hulme, University of Essex)
While some of the stigma of being indigenous in the Caribbean has disappeared over recent years, the actual advantages are still zero, so it's intriguing that some of the pride in being so has returned, or at least begun to become more public, as Caribbean indigenous peoples begin to draw on material and symbolic resources from a broader world culture in order to reproduce their indigeneity in some of the ways so well analyzed here. But there is more than just scholarly analysis: throughout this volume resonate the voices of three particular indigenous leaders, Panchito Ramrez Rojas (eastern Cuba), Ricardo Bharath Hernandez (Trinidad), and Joseph Palacio (Belize), all eloquently testifying to what survival and resurgence might really mean." The Genius in All of Us: New Insights into Genetics, Talent, and IQ, by David Shenk
With irresistibly persuasive vigor, David Shenk debunks the long-standing notion of genetic “giftedness,” and presents dazzling new scientific research showing how greatness is in the reach of every individual.
DNA does not make us who we are. “Forget everything you think you know about genes, talent, and intelligence,” he writes. “In recent years, a mountain of scientific evidence has emerged suggesting a completely new paradigm: not talent scarcity, but latent talent abundance.”
Integrating cutting-edge research from a wide swath of disciplines—cognitive science, genetics, biology, child development—Shenk offers a highly optimistic new view of human potential. The problem isn't our inadequate genetic assets, but our inability, so far, to tap into what we already have. IQ testing and widespread acceptance of “innate” abilities have created an unnecessarily pessimistic view of humanity—and fostered much misdirected public policy, especially in education.
The truth is much more exciting. Genes are not a “blueprint” that bless some with greatness and doom most of us to mediocrity or worse. Rather our individual destinies are a product of the complex interplay between genes and outside stimuli-a dynamic that we, as people and as parents, can influence.
This is a revolutionary and optimistic message. We are not prisoners of our DNA. We all have the potential for greatness.
Louann Brizendine Reviews The Genius In All of Us
Louann Brizendine, M.D.,author of The Female Brain and The Male Brain, is a diplomat of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology and the National Board of Medical Examiners, and is clinical professor of psychiatry at UCSF. She is founder and director of the Women's Mood and Hormone Clinic and the Teen Girl Mood and Hormone Clinic. She sits on the boards of many prestigious peer reviewed journals and is the recipient of numerous honors and awards. Read Brizendine's guest review of The Genius In All of Us:
In The Genius in All of Us Shenk beautifully explains why the nature-nurture debate is dead. It is not just the genes we are born with, but how we are raised and what opportunities are open to us that determine how smart we will become. Nurture and experience reshape our genes, and thus our brain. Shenk argues that the idea we are either born with genius or talent, or we aren’t, is simply untrue. The notion that relentless, deliberate practice changes the brain and thus our abilities has been undervalued over the past 30 years in favor of the concept of “innate giftedness.” Practice, practice, practice (some say 10,000 hours or more) is what it takes. Shenk argues that it is just some fantasy that effortless, gifted genius is born and not made. He marshals evidence to show that genetic factors do not trump environmental factors but rather work in concert with them. Shenk notes that by the sweat of our brow we can train ourselves to be successful--even if we are born with only average genetic talent. Scientists know that how we are raised and how we are trained affects the expression of our genes. If you think you’ve reached your talent limit, think again, Shenk says. It’s not just in your genes, he says, but in the intensity of your motivation. Ambition, persistence, and self-discipline are not just products of genes, but can be shaped by nurture and environment. Certainly it is important to have good genes, but that determines at most only 50 percent of your talent. He underscores the point that intelligence is made up of the skills that a person has developed--with an emphasis on “developed”--through hard work. Encouraging ourselves and our children to work hard requires being surrounded by others also wanting to achieve striving for excellence. Moreover, Shenk gives the hopeful message not just for kids, but also for adults. Happily for us, the human brain remains plastic, changeable and trainable well into old age. So no matter how old you are, if you’d like to be smarter--get to work! --Louann Brizendine
A Q&A with David Shenk
Question: Your book is called The Genius in All of Us: Why Everything You’ve Been Told About Genetics, Talent, and IQ is Wrong. That’s a big claim. Everything and how so?
David Shenk: It is a bold statement, and it reflects how poorly the public has been served when it comes to understanding the relationship between biology and ability. The clichés we’ve been taught about genetic blueprints, IQ, and "giftedness" all come out of crude, early-20th century guesswork. The reality is so much more interesting and complex. Genes do have a powerful influence on everything we do, but they respond to their environments in all sorts of interesting ways. We’ve now learned a lot more about the developmental mechanisms that enable people to get really good at stuff. Intelligence and talent turn out to be about process, not about whether you were born with certain "gifts."
Question: In The Genius in All of Us you state that the concept of nature versus nurture is over. Scientists, cognitive psychologists, and geneticists are moving towards an idea of ‘interactionism.' What does this mean? If the battle of genes versus environment is over, who has won? Which is more important?
David Shenk: They both won, because they're both vitally important. But the new science shows us that they do not act separately. Declaring that a person gets X-percent of his/her intelligence from genes and Y-percent from the environment is like saying that X-percent of Shakespeare's greatness can be found in his verbs, and Y-percent in his adjectives. There is no nature vs. nurture, or nature plus nurture; instead, it's nature interacting with nurture, which is often expressed by scientists as "GxE" (genes times intelligence). This is what "interactionism" refers to. A vanguard of geneticists, neuroscientists, and psychologists have stepped forward in recent years to articulate the importance of the dynamic interaction between genes and the environment.
Question: You describe genes and environment as a sound board. How so?
David Shenk: In the past, we’ve been taught that each distinct gene contains a certain dossier of information, which in turn determines a certain trait; if you have the blue-eyed gene, you get blue eyes. Period.
It turns out, though, that the information contained inside genes is only part of the story; another critical part is how often genes get "expressed," or turned on, by other genes and by outside forces. It’s therefore helpful to think of your genome as a giant mixing board with thousands of knobs and switches. Genes are always getting turned on/off/up/down by hormones, nutrients, etc. People actually affect their own genome’s behavior with their actions.
Question: How do these new findings affect the concept of the "The Bell Curve"--that we live in an increasingly stratified world where the "cognitive elite," those with the best genes, are more and more isolated from the cognitive/genetic underclass? Is that idea now completely obsolete?
David Shenk: Yes, it is obsolete. The idea that there is a genetic super-class that has a corner on high-IQ genes is nonsense. This comes out of a profound misunderstanding of how genes work and how intelligence works, and also from a misreading of so-called "heritability" studies. I am not saying that genes don’t affect intelligence. Genes affect everything. But by and large I think the evidence shows that people with low intelligence are missing out on key developmental advantages.
Question: Lewis Terman invented the IQ test at Stanford University in 1916. He declared it the ideal tool to determine a person’s native intelligence. Are IQ tests accurate? What are the benefits and fallout of the IQ test?
David Shenk: IQ tests accurately rank academic achievement. That’s quite different from identifying innate intelligence, which doesn’t really exist. Tufts intelligence expert Robert Sternberg explains that "intelligence represents a set of competencies in development." In other words, intelligence isn’t fixed. Intelligence isn’t general. Intelligence is not a thing. Instead, intelligence is a dynamic, diffuse, and ongoing process.
The IQ test has valid uses. It can help teachers and principals understand how well students are doing and what they’re missing. But the widespread belief that it defines what each of us are capable of (and limited to) is disabling for individuals and society. People simply cannot reach their full potential if they honestly believe that they are so severely restricted.
Question: How do we go about finding the genius in all of us? What steps we can take to unlock latent talent?
David Shenk: Find the thing you love to do, and work and work and work at it. Don't be discouraged by failure; realize that high achievers thrive on failure as a motivating mechanism and as instruction guide on how to get better.
*Starred Review* Intent on burying the concept of inborn genius, Shenk uses the 128 pages of “The Argument” to drive home how mistaken the notion of being genetically destined at birth to be a Mozart or a Michael Jordan is. For genes aren’t the inalterable essences that environmental effects merely help out; rather, genes and environment interact to realize a person’s potential in a constant and complicated process that Shenk attractively exemplifies through the athletic life of Ted Williams, who began hitting practice at age six and, equally important, never gave it up; also, considered to have magically sharp sight, he tested only high normal upon entering naval aviation—the thing was, he developed himself to, as Ty Cobb said, “see more of the ball than any man alive.” En route to the startling revelation that Lamarckism (variation by inheritance, not Darwinian natural selection) has truth in it, after all, Shenk corrects common knowledge about what twin studies and IQ tests really show; clarifies the arguably most misunderstood genetics term, heritable; and scientifically revives faith in not just practice and determination but also parenting and lifestyle as crucial factors, along with genes, in the realization of talents. Since this flies in the face of a century of genetic determinism, Shenk employs the equally engrossing 141 pages of “The Evidence” to cite, quote, paraphrase, and comment upon the sources for virtually every assertion in “The Argument.” --Ray Olson
--STEVEN JOHNSON, author of The Invention of Air, Ghost Map, Everything Bad is Good for You, Mind Wide Open, Emergence, and Interface Culture
"This book, both rigorous and accessible, is a close study of the idea of genius, an investigation of popular misconceptions about genetics, and an examination of the American virtue of self-determination.  It is written with assurance, insight, clarity, and wit." -- ANDREW SOLOMON, author of The Noonday Demon (National Book Award Winner, 2001)
"A great book. David Shenk handily dispels the myth that one must be born a genius. From consistently whacking the ball out of the park to composing ethereal piano sonatas, Shenk convincingly makes the case for the potential genius that lies in all of us." -- RUDOLPH E. TANZI, PH.D., Joseph P. and Rose F. Kennedy Professor of Neurology, Harvard Medical School; Director, Genetics and Aging Research Unit, Massachusetts General Hospital
PINK, author of Drive and A Whole New Mind
"In clear, forceful language, backed up by a boatload of science, David Shenk delivers a message that should be read by every parent, educator, and policy-maker who cares about the future of our children. The Genius in All of Us convincingly debunks the "genes are destiny" argument when it comes to human talent, and will force you to rethink everything from IQ tests and twins studies to child-rearing practices. Love the Content; Not fond of the Format
By DoubleM
Content and Context: David Shenk’s The Genius in All of Us gives the reader the (compelling) opportunity to act upon Socrates’ quote “The unexamined life is not worth living” by examining his/her own life and the lives of his/her parents and children. In non-scientific language Shenk presents interesting and informative data which lead the reader into arenas of self-exploration of “how did I become who I am?” Scientists admit they do not know all the answers, but do present theories which are plausible and those ingesting their “facts” are allowed to determine their own interpretation.
Format and Structure: The paperback edition is 348 pages, the first 166 pages contain The Argument; pages 167 through 348 contain The Evidence (Chapter Notes). In the first part of the book, Shenk used five footnotes , which appeared in the good old-fashioned way: on the same page of the reference. However, nowhere in the body of the work is there a reference to the Chapter Notes. Only after I finished the main content did I realize the latter portion of the book was as informative as the former, without reference thereto. Perhaps I missed something when I earned my Masters in English, only having been required to follow APA or MLA protocols (neither of which did I entirely agree with). Reading this book would have been more enjoyable had the two (split) portions been integrated/collated so that the details of The Argument and The Evidence could have been read and absorbed together.
Recommendation: Notwithstanding the above comment, I really enjoyed this book and will keep it for reference as I continue to expand my mind which is composed of GxE.
How and why "genetic influence itself is not predetermined, but [rather] an ongoing process"
By Robert Morris
Whereas in Denise Shekerjian's book, Uncommon Genius, the focus is on 40 recipients of the MacArthur Foundation Fellowship grant (often referred to as "the genius grant"), David Shenk's focus is on how and why, "dynamic development," greatness of achievement "is something to which any kid - of any age can [and should] aspire." If not in all of us, there is potential genius in most of us. "I am arguing that few of us ever get to know our own true potential, and that many of us mistake early difficulties for innate limits. I am arguing that genetic influence itself is not predetermined, but an ongoing process."
Shenk has done his homework, citing in his 25-page bibliography eight seminal articles published by K. Anders Ericsson and his associates at Florida State University. For almost four decades, they have conducted research on the process of achieving peak performance. Their influence on Shenk soon becomes evident: He names Part One, Chapters One to Six, "The Myth of Gifts." The Ericsson research leaves little (if any) doubt about the importance of (on average) 10,000 hours of "deep, deliberate practice under strict and expert supervision. Natural talent ("gifts") and luck can also be factors. For example, when members of youth sports teams are grouped according to calendar year birthdays, those born during the first six months have an advantage and those born in January-March have a significant advantage.
Shenk suggests another factor to consider, also. "The genius-in-all-of-us is not some hidden brilliance buried inside of our genes. It is the very design of the human genome - built to adapt to the world around us and to the demands we put on ourselves. With humility, with hope, and with extraordinary determination, greatness is something to which any kid - of any age - can aspire."
These are among the dozens of observations of special interest and value to me, also listed to indicate the scope of the book's thematic scope. All but the first and last are Shenk's.
o "Compared with what we ought to be, we are only half awake. Our fires are damped, our drafts are checked. We are making use of only a small part of our physical and mental resources...Stating the thing broadly, the human individual lives far within his limits." William James)
o "Contrary to what we've been taught, genes do not determine physical and character traits on their own. Rather, they interact with the environment in a dynamic ongoing process that produces and continually refines an individual." (Page 15)
o "Intelligence is not an innate aptitude, hardwired at conception or in the womb, but a collection of developing skills driven by the interaction between genes and environment. No one is born with a predetermined amount of intelligence. Intelligence (and IQ scores) can be improved. Few adults come close to their true intellectual potential." (34)
o "Child prodigies and superlative adult achievers are often not the same people. Understanding what makes remarkable abilities appear at different phases of a person's life provides an important insight into what talent really is." (84)
o "The old nature/nurture paradigm suggests that control over our lives is divided between genes (nature) and our own decisions (nurture)). In fact, we have far more control over our genes - and far less control over our environment - than we think." (115)
o "It must not be left to genes and parents to foster greatness; spurring individual achievement is also the duty of society. Every culture must strive to foster values that bring out the best in people." (144)
o "We have long understood [believed to be true] that lifestyle cannot alter heredity. But it turns out that it can..." (155)
o "Evidence for the contribution of talent over and above practice has proven extremely elusive...[In contrast] evidence is now emerging that exceptional performance in memory, chess, music, sports and other arenas can be fully accounted for on the basis of an age-old adage: practice makes perfect." David Shanks (171) However, Ericsson and his colleagues have concluded that there are many different types and degrees of practice that produce different types and degrees of result.
As indicated, David Shenk`s approach in this book is to review the situation: misconceptions about individual differences in talent and human intelligence; identify the problem: very few of us ever get to know or are even aware of our human potential; offer a solution in the form of an argument: use dynamic development to "tap into the genetic assets we already have"; and then present 178 pages of evidence in support of that argument.
Those who share my high regard for this book are urged to check out Shekerjian's aforementioned Uncommon Genius as well as Doug Lemov's Practice Perfect: 42 Rules for Getting Better at Getting Better, Geoff Colvin's Talent Is Overrated: What Really Separates World-Class Performers from Everybody Else, Daniel Coyle's The Talent Code: Greatness Isn't Born. It's Grown. Here's How, and Malcolm Gladwell's Outliers: The Story of Success. All of these authors express their substantial debt to Ericsson and his pioneering research. If you really want to put some white caps on your gray matter, read Gerald Edelman's Bright Air, Brilliant Fire: On The Matter of The Mind.
Is it possible
By Amazon Customer
This book could show us the potential genius in all of us. Is possible to develop the talent. Yes. Are their gifted child that can do it. In my option yes. There are to many unknowns can't be explained. The big question is are you born with it. Or you develop it.
If your parents are geniuses that you are highly intelligence to. That is what we were lead to believe this idea. Why if you fail your Iq tests. And you didn't prepare, or you couldn't worth it get a study guide. Or you had physically or mentally problem. It doesn't matter. You were stamped, processed and filed as low academic value. Which means you were educated to the level your academic classified you as.
It does mean that if you do better, or improve your still low-value. You don't halve potential to do better. While if you are lucky and done better in those test it would be different.
Side note: the IQ tests were never designed to measure the intelligences of a person. But you find the strengths and weakens of the person.
