This is the third time I have purchased this book. Two in paperback which I shared with many other mothers, many years ago, and now an ebook version. Well worth every cent, every single time.

Every parent needs to read this to ensure that they have the best tools available to protect their children from pedophiles. This book gives accounts from both sides, police, victims and the monsters themselves.

Written by police officers from the Victoria Police Child Exploitation Squad (based in Australia), this is a disturbing read but a necessary one.
I know that this book has helped protect many children in my life, including my own.

Thank you to the authors for writing such a brave but unfortunately necessary book.

Finding the Strangenesses

Wyatt Mason begins "The Danger Artist" in late July one month after Ai Weiwei was released from the Chinese authority. Knowing the likelihood of speaking with Ai was slim to none, the narrative is formed around the impossible journey of finding Ai. Seemingly defeated at the outset, the journey attempts "to see enough of the world he [Ai] called his own to make sense of a matter of no small interest: Why it is that not a few people of discernment now consider him to be one of the most significant artists working today."

In the short ten days of Mason's visit to Beijing, he indeed sees enough of Beijing to capture the city's strangeness or "strangenesses." On the common uncommon qualities we hear about Beijing--the unbearable smog, heat, vastness and sheer enormity--Mason's telling is original and beautifully seen. And despite the gravity of subject, levity is not lacking in the odd situations Mason finds himself in, from an `unprincipled paparazzo' diner stakeout to an awkward spa moment involving the question "you want massage...here."

These vignettes when interwoven communicate the crux of China's strangeness, that elusive strangeness of life in a totalitarian state. It's not so much that Mason writes it directly, but in each vignette the reader gets more a sense of the muted yet pervasive illogic, double-talk, and absurdity in daily happenings. It's like when Mason arrives at the final stop, and says "We were here. And yet we were not."

In feeling some small part of Ai's world, does the difficultly of seeing through all the strangenesses become apparent and does Ai's insistence on reality and fact in his art truly become extraordinary. A wonderfully written and thoughtful essay--I highly recommend it.

Whatever we think is meaningful is somehow dangerous

Wyatt Mason arrived in Beijing a month after the Chinese artist, dissident, gambler, provocateur and conscientious objector via Twitter Ai Weiwei was released from an 81-day detention by police and forbidden from speaking to the international press. This gripping, furious, and beautifully reported dispatch from the maw of the simmering megalopolis (Mao's credo "no construction without destruction" has found its ultimate expression in the city's current building boom) tells the story of Mason's careful dance to meet his subject--Ai Weiwei's studio is watched by cameras and his every move, both online and off, is monitored--and his encounters with a society where everything is furtive, it seems, except consumption. I won't play spoiler here and reveal what happens; but Mason manages to capture, with just a few deftly chosen scenes, the strangeness of life in the hybrid state that the PRC has become, the cost of its repressive human rights policies, and the true value of artistic expression, which is only dimly related to any work's value in the marketplace. This is not your ordinary magazine writing, and it should be required reading for ayone who loves their Chinese-made handhelds and readers. I'm going to tell everyone I know about this Single!

The Power of Thinking under Dictatorship

I just read Mr. Mason's book on Ai Weiwei the day that Vaclav Havel died, and the parallels are extraordinary. Ai Weiwei is not only one of my favorite artists, which I knew. What I did not know is how courageous he is and how he has become one of the leading political actors in China, someone whose insistence on truth is making him the most dangerous man in China, at least from the perspective of the Chinese Communist Party. He is also one of the most interesting. This is a spectacular book-length essay that is beautifully written and brings you into Ai Weiwei's world slowly and deeply. By the end I was left wanting more. It reminds me of Hannah Arendt's insight, that in dictatorship simply thinking becomes political. The Danger Artist (GQ Books) Highly recommended.

The "Sacred Scroll" for serious Ape-o-philes!

I can count on the fingers (and fully-opposable thumb) of one hand the number of books that have impressed, entertained, and inspired me as much as this one.

It doesn't hurt that I grew up as a hardcore Ape-o-phile. Still, had "Planet of the Apes as American Myth" been a mere nostalgic retrospective, it would not have riveted me as it did. Something strange happened as I read Greene's lucid, insightful and cogent commentary. I came to understand, finally, just why the Apes series and the world it evoked had, during my pre-teen and teen years, intrigued me on so many levels at once...and why the series' admittedly outlandish sci-fi premise always had to it the ring of truth. Reading this book, I felt vindicated. It was as if the author said, "You were right all along, Paul. These films really DID matter -- and here's why."

Like the final scene in the original 1968 film, Greene's book forces you to look back at all that preceded it (in this case, the POTA films & TV series) in an entirely new light. For Apes fans this is, quite simply, a MUST-READ.

Not just about race...

The Ape movies were not just mirrors to show us our racial problems but also to show solutions to them. But it wasn't just about race, but also about foreign affairs such as the Cold War and the Vietnam Conflict, religion vs. science, nature vs. nurture, the fears of a nuclear holocaust, even our treatment of animals and how we treat women.

The book really helped me to understand the movies with a detailed background about the times in which the movies were created. The book also has a touch of humor even while explaining about what the films were trying to say or show. Sometimes without even knowing it.

In film and telelvision, very few things happen by pure accident. Although Greene may seem at times to "read too much" into 'Planet of the Apes', in reality he presents a clear and very detailed analysis of the series and films in relation to the time in which they were produced. The connections between the two cannot be overlooked, and whether or not you agree with all of Greene's points, it is necessary to have all possible ideas presented in this type of study. This is exactly what we do with Shakespeare, for example--analyze his "art" in historical context. Whether Shakespeare intended all of the possible connections is, ultimately, irrelevent. Television and film, as a modern art form, can be examined in the same way. This book is a fine example of such analysis. Greene is a talented young writer and I look forward to more of his work.

This book has 101 fun ways to play and have fun, while relaxing and shedding the tensions that even our little ones find building during the day. There are sit down games, and active games. One suggestion is even for a tea party with Chamomile tea!

Scouting expeditions, massage circles, campfire games (around a candle) and mental gymnastics are all included. I work in a school for special needs children and there are many games that our students will be able to play and enjoy. Of course this is not a book meant to be handed off to a child with instructions to "go and play." This is a book to give adults new ideas of how to interact with children and find new ways to enjoy some down time.

One of my favorite parts of this book are the little bits of wisdom tucked here and there among the games, Such as "Imagination is more important tan knowledge" Albert Einstein .

"I love this book. I am a home daycare mom and this book has lots of fun ideas to use with the kids. African Back Drums (pg 36) is a favorite for the kids to do with a friend and it feels great and relives the day’s tension when the kids use my back as the drum! There are 100 different ideas to do with the kids and they are lots of fun. I like how easy it is to use…it is a Smart Fun book and the third one I have read. Not bad, not great.

Ok book. I teach grade 4 and I find about 4-5 games I actually do with my students. Some games didn't feel right to be used in a public school setting. Not a complaint, just my opinion. The few games I use, the kids really enjoy.

fun and simple!

Great games for kids

101 Relaxation Games for Children, by Allison Bartl is an easy to read book geared towards those who teach or otherwise interact with young children.

The book delivered more than I was expecting from a book of this type. The first great surprise was the excellent set up of the list of games table. This table lists all of the games by name and shows what size group each particular game is best suited for. Another great tool are the icons used throughout the book, these break down the games into even more detail so you can tell which would be best suited for your needs. For example, the Sunshine Icon indicates that the game involves going outdoors, so if you are in the middle of a New England winter and the outside temp is 2 degrees, you would know to skip the game with this icon.

The second pleasure of this book is the wonderful and imaginative games within. I found all of them to be easy to understand and fun for everyone involved. My personal favorites include Eagle Eyes (page 40) where the group must stand still and use their eyes to find an object hidden in plain view (the purpose being to calm rowdy children) and Mental Journeys (page 87) where the leader of the group describes a place everyone is familiar with and the others in the group quess where they are talking about, a great way to enhance a child's descriptive powers and listening skills.

There are even a few games here the I feel could be beneficial to myself, such as Angry Spaghetti (page 15), where you use imagery to pull negative thoughts out of your head. I know I could use some help getting rid of bad thoughts at the end of the day!

Overall, I would highly recommend this book to any care giver, teacher, and parent. I plan to show this to my son's second grade teacher, I know she will find many uses for this book when dealing with energetic 7 year olds!
