When Midori, a part-time hooker, vanishes from a New Haven motel into the night after stabbing a customer through the neck with a sharp pencil (he'd been praying for her salvation while trying to kill her), cop William Shute takes the case in this fast-paced noir caper from Bechard (Balls, etc.). The dead guy is Richard Deegan, family man and second in command of the Sons of God, a group of southern-based fundamentalists with strict morals and deep pockets due shortly to rally in the Connecticut city. When another Son of God gets similarly dispatched, the powers that be start looking for a serial killer. But Shute isn't so sure. For one thing, Deegan had an unhealthy interest in pornography, a hatred for hookers and most upsetting personally images of Shute's former wife on his laptop's hard drive with a bewildering series of sexual partners. A loose cannon in trouble with his superiors, Shute is haunted by his '53 Fender Telecaster (the first year of the legendary guitar's production), an object that represents all his adolescent dreams. The author, a screenwriter and independent director, seems to be offering more existentialist fare than standard loner shamus material, but he never fully delivers all the noir angles. Nonetheless, the suspense level remains high to the end, as Shute, suspended from the force, attracted to a female cop but entangled with one of the likable and believable hookers he encounters in the escort industry, strives to find all the answers. The victim turns out to be a powerful, self-righteous religious organization's number-two man, and its other leaders, holding a conference in town, believe that the murder was staged. A second killing with nearly the same modus operandi increases pressure on the police. Shute finds revealing and personally disturbing computer evidence that turns the case around. Crisp prose and an engaging if somewhat predictable plot keep the interest level high in this debut mystery. Recommended for larger collections.

A man apparently murdered by a prostitute turns out to be an influential figure in a religious group called the Sons of God, which is planning a major rally in New Haven, Connecticut. Among the victim's possessions are a lot of very odd and scary-looking tools. New Haven police detective William Shute must determine if the dead man was just a nutcase who was saintly by day and satanic by night or if more mayhem is on the way. Like the film 8mm, which plunged its hero into the dark and ugly world of "snuff films," this novel takes Shute deep into the underground of Internet prostitution. It's not a pretty place to spend a lot of time, but Bechard, author of the satirical Second Greatest Story Ever Told (1991), somehow manages to keep us from feeling too uncomfortable. Shute, the newly divorced computer-expert detective, is a fresh and most appealing character who deserves his own series. Fans of gritty, realistic mysteries with an edge should be well pleased. Reality equally as strange as fiction . . . .

. . .and Bechard knows exactly how to integrate the two in a sarcastic, dark, and humorous way. There is always so much truth behind the mysteries that unravel in Bechards books. The truths are not pretty but is that why we turn to fiction such as this? If you take a closer look his work seems on a continuous basis to deal with basic human conditions - our falterings. The ones we would rather not admit to, rather not consciously take part in but we read and we recognize whether or not we prefer to admit that this side of reality does not only exist in books or in the minds of great writers such as Gorman Bechard.
The storyline could very well have been taken directly from a news stroy or may in the future with just a few changes in detail. Through this book and his other books we learn to poke fun at ourselves, whether we are the Sons of God type, one of the hooker types, one of the detective types ect. ect. We find a piece of ourselves in each character if we are brave enough to dive into our own dark depths. This is what I believe draws the reader in and keeps them interested. One never knows what will happen next, the characters take on a life of their own, as it is in reality. I also truly appreciate and find amusing Bechards constant play on words --- mysteries inside of mysteries inside of mysteries. Read it more than once.

A real page turner!

One of those books that you literally can't put down because the chapters are so short, you get suckered into reading just one more. Fast, VERY sexy, with great dialog, and it pokes fun at those who need it most (including Yale). Give this one a shot.

Not your run of the mill mystery novel ...

I'm not generally a fan of detective stories, mysteries, or crime novels. Ninth Square is a fascinating read as it seems to break the boundaries of it's classified genre. Bechard's style is genuinely engaging and has a very natural feel, not at all forced. The prose reads like thoughts.
The bulk of the novel is written in the first person and makes you feel as if you are in the head of the main character, Detective William Shute, reliving the memories of the week-long series of events which make up the plot of the novel. The story is fast paced and engaging and Bechard doesn't solve the mystery (or allow the reader to solve it) until the end. It is absolutely packed with red herrings, believable red herrings, as any good mystery should be. Bechard has a real talent for writing likable characters, which, when coming from a misanthrope such as myself, is saying a lot. When I give it a second read - and you can be sure I will give it a second read, as with all of Bechard's tales, be they feature length films ("Psychos in Love"), experimental shorts ("The Pretty Girl"), or literature ("The Hazmat Diaries", "Ninth Square"), once is not enough - I look forward to seeing what I missed the first time around by not knowing the outcome. I hope that Bechard plans to bring Detective Shute back in future novels, but until he does, I highly recommend giving "Ninth Square" a good read.

About the Author

Y. H. Hui received his Ph.D. degree from the University of California at Berkeley. He is currently a senior scientist with the consulting firm of Science Technology System in West Sacramento, California. He has authored, coauthored, edited, or coedited more than 30 books in food science, food technology, food engineering, and food laws, including Handbook of Food Product Manufacturing and Handbook of Food Science, Technology, and Engineering. He has guest-lectured in universities in North, Central, and South America as well as Europe, and Asia and is currently a consultant for the food industries, with an emphasis on food sanitation and food safety.

E. �zg�l Evranuz is a professor (1994–present) of food processing at the Food Engineering Department of İstanbul Technical University (ITU), Turkey. After graduating from the Chemical Engineering Department of Middle East Technical University (METU, 1971) in Ankara, Turkey, she began her academic career in the area of food technology. She holds M.S. degrees in chemical engineering (METU) and food science and management (University of London, Queen Elizabeth College) and a Ph.D. degree in chemical engineering (ITU). She is one of the founders of the Food Engineering Department of ITU. Her main interests are preservation, storage, and packaging of food plant materials. She has served as a book editor and has several publications in the field.

By the end of the sixth century CE, both the royal courts and the educated elite in China were collecting works of art, particularly scrolls of calligraphy and paintings done by known artists. By the time of Emperor Huizong (1082-1135) of the Song dynasty (960-1279), both scholars and the imperial court were cataloguing their collections and also collecting ancient bronzes and rubbings of ancient inscriptions. The catalogues of Huizong's painting, calligraphy, and antiquities collections list over 9,000 items, and the tiny fraction of the listed items that survive today are all among the masterpieces of early Chinese art.

Patricia Ebrey's study of Huizong's collections places them in both political and art historical context. The acts of adding to and cataloguing the imperial collections were political ones, among the strategies that the Song court used to demonstrate its patronage of the culture of the brush, and they need to be seen in the context of contemporary political divisions and controversies. At the same time, court intervention in the art market was both influenced by, and had an impact on, the production, circulation, and imagination of art outside the court.

Accumulating Culture provides a rich context for interpreting the three book-length catalogues of Huizong's collection and specific objects that have survived. It contributes to a rethinking of the cultural side of Chinese imperial rule and of the court as a patron of scholars and the arts, neither glorifying Huizong as a man of the arts nor castigating him as a megalomaniac, but rather taking a hardheaded look at the political and cultural ramifications of collecting and the reasons for choices made by Huizong and his curators. The reader is offered glimpses of the magnificence of the collections he formed and the disparate fates of the objects after they were seized as booty by the Jurchen invaders in 1127.

The heart of the book examines in detail the primary fields of collecting -- antiquities, calligraphy, and painting. Chapters devoted to each of these use Huizong's catalogues to reconstruct what was in his collection and to probe choices made by the cataloguers. The acts of inclusion, exclusion, and sequencing that they performed allowed them to influence how people thought of the collection, and to attempt to promote or demote particular artists and styles.
