Abandoned at the age of four to wander the war-torn Korean countryside, Stephanie Fast was persecuted and tortured because of her bi-racial ethnicity. After she was discarded and left to die on a garbage dump, a Swedish nurse miraculously rescued her. A few years later, Stephanie covered with boils and dirt, lice infected, worm ridden, and cross-eyed from malnutrition caught the attention of a childless American couple who visited the orphanage where she had been given shelter. Stephanie was so dead emotionally that she rejected compassionate love. However, the couple heard the Creator speak to their hearts: She is the one for you. The couple responded and adopted Stephanie. Stephanie Fast has been an internationally known public speaker who has impacted hundreds of thousands of lives with her compelling life story that began as an abandoned Korean War orphan. For the past few years she has focused her efforts on advocating for orphans around the globe. She lives in Oregon with her husband, Darryl, and to her great joy near their children and grandchildren.

Such a great story of hope!

Stephanie Fast shares her story of being abandoned as a child, being found, and eventually being taken in under the wings of a family. She was brought into this world as part Korean and American, which wasn't accepted in the Korean culture her mother was a part of. She was called a terrible name, which meant something horrible. When her mom took her somewhere so she could travel to be with another family member, a series of devastating events happen while she is lost. She ends up in a place that others probably sometimes die at. She continues to tell her story of how she suffered even after life got better for her later.

This is an amazing story of survival, hope, and the start of a healing process I believe Stephanie went through. I liked how she shared this not just as her story but also in a way that tells how her story is so much like the stories of others who went through (and some are currently going through) the same type of thing that she went though as a orphan. I know that no two stories about surviving as an orphan are the same, but I learned from reading this book that they often go through some of the same life experiences and feel some type of emotional pain and have emotional scars later in life. The open letter from Stephanie at the end gave me some anticipation about hopefully reading her next book about how she lived after she survived the devastation she endured.

I believe this will be a great book for people that are currently orphans to read, to give them some hope. I also believe it will be a good book for people to read who are thinking about, are in the process of, and who have already adopted a child.

Prepare to be moved

Imagine. Imagine that everyone around you treats you differently from others. Imagine that they call you "tougee" and even though you don't understand what the word means, you know how it makes you feel. Imagine that you are abandoned by your family, left on a train...alone. Imagine that you have to make your way in the world and that nobody will help you. Imagine that you have to survive harsh winters, dig up, catch or steal food and make clothes out of straw for warmth. Now imagine that at the start of your journey you are only four years old.

In her new book She is Mine, author Stephanie Fast takes her readers on an emotional roller coaster as she describes in horrifying detail the trying ordeal she endured as a young girl struggling to survive in South Korea following the Korean War. The daughter of an American soldier and an unwed Korean mother, this nameless child is unwanted and unwelcomed not just by her family, but by everyone she meets.

As you read this account, you will not help but become emotionally involved in the story, turning page after page, praying for a good outcome, for someone to take notice. As a parent your heart will ache for this child, for the physical and emotional trauma she suffers and the innocence that is lost. You will shed tears of sorrow as you are reminded of the tender young age of the one suffering. You will want to hold onto your own children tightly and vow again to shield them from all the darkness of this world. As a human being you will be enraged at the countless abuses she endures by total strangers simply because she was born of the wrong parents. Through it all, your soul will give thanks as you see the hand of Providence in the rare kindnesses shown.

In many ways, this book would be at home on a shelf in the "Horror" section of a book store because it is truly a horror story. It is also a story of survival, of living, when it seems impossible. Perhaps, the most compelling (and the most horrifying thing) about it is that it is a true story. It really happened. It still happens today. Ms. Fast writes "At this moment, there are an estimated 143 million orphans throughout the world who have been abandoned or abused. All are crying out or a caring person to deliver them from the hands of their oppressors."

If you are not prepared to be moved... if you are not prepared to be shaken to the core with abundant emotion, do not read this book. However, if you are willing to open your mind to the plight of millions of children, then pick up this book. Sit down, open it, read it, weep, mourn and prepare to be changed as your mind is made aware not just of tragedy but also of hope that exists all around you..

A life-changing story that you must read

I read this entire book in one night because I simply could not put it down. Just an incredible story on so many levels. I don't think I could survive if left outside for a week, let alone as a young helpless child left alone to survive for years. God's hand is so apparent throughout this story, and I was greatly moved and greatly encouraged by Stephanie's transparency. May God bless this book and give us all a heart to reach out and help the helpless around the world.

Furthermore, in studies of mainstream college composition, basic writing, and diversity, these students' status as second-language learners is usually left unaddressed or even misconstrued as underpreparation. Nevertheless, research and pedagogical writings have yet to take up the particular issues entailed in teaching composition to this student population. The intent in this volume is to bridge this gap and to initiate a dialogue on the linguistic, cultural, and ethical issues that attend teaching college writing to U.S.-educated linguistically diverse students.

This book is the first to address explicitly issues in the instruction of "1.5 generation" college writers. From urban New York City to midwestern land grant universities to the Pacific Rim, experienced educators and researchers discuss a variety of contexts, populations, programs, and perspectives. The 12 chapters in this collection, authored by prominent authorities in non-native language writing, are research based and conceptual, providing a research-based survey of who the students are, their backgrounds and needs, and how they are placed and instructed in a variety of settings. The authors frame issues, raise questions, and provide portraits of language minority students and the classrooms and programs that serve them.

Together, the pieces paint the landscape of college writing instruction for 1.5 generation students and explore the issues faced by ESL and college writing programs in providing appropriate writing instruction to second-language learners arriving from U.S. high schools.

This book serves not only to articulate an issue and set an agenda for further research and discussion, but also to suggest paths toward linguistic and cultural sensitivity in any writing classroom. It is thought-provoking reading for college administrators, writing teachers, and scholars and students of first- and second-language composition.

About the Author
Jan Frodesen is Director of ESL in the Department of Linguistics, University of California, Santa Barbara, where she reaches graduate and undergraduate courses in ESL and TESL. Her research and professional interests includes composition pedagogy, academic literacy, development, pedagogical grammar and ESL articulation issues in post secondary education.

Ilona Leki (Ph.D. University of Illinois) is associate professor of English and director of ESL at the University of Tennessee. Co-editor of the Journal of Second Language Writing and Reading in the Composition Classroom: Second Language Perspectives, she is the author of Academic Writing: Techniques and Tasks. She has served on the Editorial Advisory Board of the TESOL Quarterly and as president of Tennessee TESOL. Her work abroad includes teaching English and conducting teacher-training programs in France, Yugoslavia, Turkey, Colombia, Brazil, and Egypt.

Wolfe-Quintero teaches in the English as a Second Language and Second Language Acquisition Programs at the University of Hawai'i.

Ramanathan is Associate Professor in the Linguistics Department of the University of California, Davis.

Paul Bruthiaux, Dwight Atkinson, William G. Eggington, William Grabe and Vaidehi Ramanathan conducted their doctoral research at the University of Southern California in the 1980s and 1990s, with Robert B. Kaplan playing a significant role in their development as applied linguists. Now they have joined forces to co-edit a collection of essays and research papers that review current trends across the spectrum of applied linguistics and discuss their implications for the future the field.

About the Author

Takuah Soho (1573-1645) was a prelate of the Rinzai Sect of Zen, well remembered for his strength of character and acerbic wit; and he was also gardener, poet, tea master, prolific author and a pivotal figure in Zen painting and calligraphy. His religious training began at the age of ten. He entered the Rinzai sect at the age of fourteen and was appointed abbot of the Daitokuji, a major Zen temple in Kyoto, at the age of thirty-five. After a disagreement on ecclesiastical appointments with the second Tokugawa shogun, he was banished in 1629 to a far northern province. Coming under a general amnesty on the death of the shogun, he returned to society three years later to be, among other things, a confidant of the third Tokugawa shogun.

William Scott Wilson, the translator, was born in 1944 and grew up in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. As an undergraduate student at Dartmouth College in 1966, he was invited by a friend to join a three-month kayak trip up the coast of Japan from Shimonoseki to Tokyo. This eye-opening journey, beautifully documented in National Geographic, spurred Wilson's fascination with the culture and history of Japan.
After receiving a B.A. degree in political science from Dartmouth, Wilson earned a second B.A. in Japanese language and literature from the Monterey Institute of Foreign Studies in Monterey, California, then undertook extensive research on Edo-period (1603-1868) philosophy at the Aichi Prefectural University, in Nagoya, Japan.

Wilson completed his first translation, Hagakure, while living in an old farmhouse deep in the Japanese countryside. Hagakure saw publication in 1979, the same year Wilson completed an M.A. in Japanese language and literature at the University of Washington. Wilson's other translations include The Book of Five Rings, The Life-Giving Sword, The Unfettered Mind, the Eiji Yoshikawa novel Taiko, and Ideals of the Samurai, which has been used as a college textbook on Japanese history and thought. Two decades after its initial publication, Hagakure was prominently featured in the Jim Jarmusch film Ghost Dog. Wilson currently lives in Miami, Florida.

An unexplicated work of profound simplicity

Takuan's voice in this work provides resonance for scholars and martial artists alike. For avid readers of the Zen tradition, this book offers both contrast and compliment to Zen Mind, Beginner's Mind by Shunryu Suzuki. Most intersting I thought was his disticntion between the "mind of principle" and the "mind of technique". It stimulates meditation on our own day-to-day quality of thought and action.

A PATH TO ENLIGHTENMENT

I have been involved with the martial arts for over 25 years. Student, instructor, swordsman. I consider this book a reference tool and a source of inspiritation. My copy is worn and tattered, what more can I say.
I am sure that Musashi valued his friendship with the author. The insights into human nature and self improvement are timeless.

Excellent guide for seasoned Windows administrators

I've been using Windows Server for a long time, but like any experienced administrator, there are aspects of Windows Server which I simply don't use regularly, or even at all.

This book is excellent for any Windows administrator because it provides a balanced view of all the major Windows Server roles and features. It doesn't delve into staggering and bewildering depths, but it also doesn't skim the surface. It provides satisfactory levels of technical and summary content on every aspect of Windows Server, generally proving that while you certainly do know your stuff in the areas you deal with every day, there are always useful things to learn.

It is also an excellent resource for learning about areas of Windows Server which you may not be as familiar with. Written for experienced administrators, the book assumes that while you may not know much about a particular area, you certainly don't need hand-holding to get up to speed quickly.

In Orin's usual style, the tone is friendly and accessible. Personally, I have already learned a few things which I'm going to try in my next server build, and have had my attention drawn to some areas which I'd overlooked, and now want to spend more time with.

Books like this also serve to re-engage Windows administrators with the product they use every day. Keep a copy on your desk - you won't regret it :-)

I've been a sysadmin for 10 years and don't normally bother with technical books because they're aimed at beginners or passing a specific exam. However, this book is fantastic! I have no trouble working with server 2008 r2 day to day and can usually find an answer online when I need to but this book answered questions I didn't know that I needed to ask. It's well written, easy to read, concise and packed full of little tips that I was actually a itching to try out. Most importantly it's not full of jargon or long boring sales pitches, I found it interesting and light enough to read cover to cover.

I also found the 'how to' section for each topic really useful because it meant that i could try out the new things i'd come across without having to go off to research them online first.

I'd recommend this book to any sysadmin who's familiar with the basics, has administered servers for a while but wants a quick 'catch me up' on the new operating systems features.

Definitely one of the best technical books I've come across in a long time.

My thoughts and review on Windows Server 2008 R2 Secrets

These days I spend very little time with server systems, but lots of time meeting and mentoring with those people who do. I liked the text, and would reccomend it to any team of IT Pros, who are looking to invest in themselves and upskill.

I enjoyed the physical layout of the book, 'highlighting' in the text, and notes in the margins - an easy way to absorb additional information without losing context. Most chapters are about ~30 pages, so it was possible to cover the whole book in a week, reading a few chapters on the train to and from work.

The content within the book, was also well done. Clearly Orin has spent a lot of time with a lot of people, and the book is written in a (almost an uncanny) way, of pre-empting your next question.

In summary, a good solid text for already savvy administrators who want to know more; lots of supporting links and references, and a wealth of information "from the trenches" that is relevant.

A good no-nonsense volume

I bought this for my daughters. It is a good introductory version of the Gita. I have read quite a number of editions, and sadly do not remember which were the most interesting to me and why. This particularly volume is not as rich with respect to imagery as many of the others. I wanted to be careful about how some volumes use artistic liberties in an attempt to teach the reader. The reason is that the dialogue between Arjuna and Krishna can lead one to discover for themselves its allegorical wisdom A process of self discovery. This addition at the very least, does no harm. In a couple places it used the word "individual," in a way in which I suggested that they interpret it as 'ego' instead.

This translation gives us just the words of the Gita without commentary ... trusting the reader is wise enough to interpret and understand. I read through the night and couldn't put it down.
