Thru: An Appalachian Trail Love Story, by Richard Judy

When a diverse group of northbound "thru-hikers" meet on Springer Mtn., the southern terminus of the fabled Appalachian Trail, they begin developing a bond that will unite them as they embark on a 2,184-mile odyssey toward Maine's venerable Mt. Katahdin. When author Richard Judy completed a southbound hike of the A.T. in 1973 at age 21, he dreamed of capturing the essence of this last great American adventure on paper. Now, in THRU: An Appalachian Trail Love Story a decades-old vision comes to life as his characters take on the elation, the blisters, the excruciating pain and the unimaginable thirst and hunger of a thru-hike. Ultimately, the novel explores the sheer existential conundrum of why anyone would spend months walking along ridge crests and examines the human side of the wilderness trek that millions ponder but few actually experience. THRU also contemplates the question asked by all thru-hikers: "What have I gotten myself into?"

Review
"A lively and surprisingly moving page turner about a group of mismatched strangers who start out hiking the 'A.T.' together in Georgia." -- Jill Vejnoska, Atlanta Journal-Constitution"This book just might kick off a 'THRU' generation. Check it out, it's a heckuva 2,000-mile read." -- Ralph Ferussi, Poughkeepsie Journal"Deserves a place on the shelf with (Bill) Bryson." -- B.J. Small, Gettysburg Times"We highly recommend this 'thru-ly' enjoyable book." -- Pam and Randy Golden, authors of 60 Hikes Within 60 Miles: Atlanta

From the Author
THRU: An Appalachian Trail Love Story is about romantic love, love for the outdoors, love for the amazing culture of the A.T. and love and respect among the wacky and diverse community of thru-hikers -- those who choose to hike under unwashed, ill-fed, constantly extreme conditions and somehow manage to experience transcendent joy. THRU attempts to capture in fiction what I have lived for the past 50 years as a lover of trail hiking. After hiking the A.T. twice (in 1973 as a thru-hiker, and in July 2014, when I wrapped up a 15-year section hike), I have encountered scores of gritty characters, amazing locations and truly outrageous circumstances discovered when spending months in the wilderness. I have hiked, bicycled and canoed all over America and the world -- never regretting a minute of it. My kids are both A.T. thru-hikers as well, proving that no matter how much a dad blathers on about his favorite topic assuming his kids are ignoring him, well, sometimes they actually listen. THRU is my gift to the Appalachian Trail Museum which receives all proceeds. Every purchase is guaranteed to satisfy, because even if you find my prose to be lacking, at least you know the sale benefits a wonderful project dedicated to preserving culture, artifacts and memories of the world's greatest hiking trail. But I think if you are a thru-hiker, you will find the book to be an amusing sentimental journey. And if you are a dreamer who sometimes wonders what a 2,000-mile foot journey through the wilds of the Appalachians would be like, THRU will give you some sense of that. THRU is my first novel. It flowed into the keyboard with alacrity, because it was a linear tale told in the character's own words. I drew upon decades of experience to mix and match personalities I have know -- or heard about -- with my own characters. Most are an amalgam of real people with a little imagination thrown in. I am working on a second novel which does not have an A to B progression. It takes much more energy and creativity I'm finding. Feel free to visit my Facebook page and comment on the book or just watch the way I keep joining my friends to lead what I call the "Hiker's Life." If reading THRU entertains or inspires you, I have accomplished my mission.

Warning: This book will make you late for work!
By John L. Boyer Jr.
I just finished Thru and am very impressed. When I got about 1/4 into it had a hard time putting it down. At 3/4 I slowed down a bit to savor it. The characters are really diverse and for the most part are known by their trail names. Personalities such as Brave Phillie, Sky Writer, Ultra Grunge and Captain Stupid come across as too quirky and authentic to be purely the product of a writers imagination. And in the acknowledgements the author says as much. The book is written from the viewpoints of several travelers journals, so the reader gets to experience the journey from their viewpoints simultaneously.

I hope this book will have a broader appeal than just those who are interested in hiking or the AT. I can easily see it as a TV series or a movie. The storyline deals with things that affect all of us... love, rejection, growing up and growing old, joy and pain; all set against the backdrop of random people escaping the 'real world' for a while to enjoy God's creation.

In my very little time hiking on the AT I have seen the unusual culture of the trail in action. It really is some sort of magic, and Richard Judy has captured it well. So get the book! And remember ALL of the proceeds go to help fund the Appalachian Trail Museum.

Interesting addition to the " I hiked the AT " books
By Archie Leach
I agree with most of the reviewers that this is indeed a good read, and better than most of the books written by folks who have hiked the trail. The problems with many of the books written about hiking the AT by people who have hiked the trail, is that they merely chronicle their experiences. They tend to be just elongated trail journals written by people who have a story to tell, but who are not necessarily good story tellers.

I mean no disrespect for those people, because as a person who has read the unedited journals of Lewis and Clark, I know that it is tough to make a trek interesting day after day.

However Richard Judy makes the interaction of the characters the main story line, with the actual hiking the background. The characters are believable for the most part. The only issue I had, was believing that each of these characters who basically tell the story in their own words, via journals, recordings, and e-mails to family back home, could possibly be articulate enough to express themselves like experienced writers.

Like most of the books in this category ( books on the AT ), I wonder how much interest there is for people who have not experienced long distance hiking.
If you have hiked all or portions of the AT, you will no doubt love this book. If you have had little or no experience hiking, you may find it not your cup of tea.

An exciting novel of discovery!
By JR Keenan, Author of Phantom Fire
In the final analysis, people read stories to be entertained. If they are also informed about a subject, so much the better. When I started Thru I knew next to nothing about thru-hiking or the Appalachian Trail. After doing a little research, I found the many people had written books on the subject. But the creative genius of Richard Judy is that wrote a NOVEL about the trail. Then he filled it with interesting characters and let us look into their very souls. Why would anyone do something so arduous as hike through a wilderness for "fun"? Each person has their own reason, their own internal journey that drives the external one. People often spend their lives trying to find out who they really are, to lose the pigeon hole existences assigned to them by the luck of birth or circumstance. But in the end we are all struggling to be our real selves. To watch each person complete a metamorphosis into their true selves makes for a truly fascinating read. As humans we all bond together when we have to depend on each other. It is the only way we can really come to understand and love each other. Thank you Richard Judy for allowing me to watch "Captain Stupid" turn into simply "The Captain." Thru is a wonderful, inventive novel and I recommend it to everyone who has the courage to stray form the beaten path into this wonderful world of discovery
